Credit history question
I am a fresh college graduate. I had an interview with a company a few weeks ago, and I haven't heard back from them yet. What concerns me is my credit history: I made a few late payments on my cell phone bill the last year. But another thing is that I am not sure if I have a credit history yet, or not. I worked full-time for two summers when I was still in school. By working, could I have established my credit history? Well, I guess I had a credit record since I was able to get a cell phone contract. But ironically, I don't own any credit card or anything. I have a checking account with my bank - that's all.
In short, could my summer jobs and the cell phone plan possibly offset my credit record? If so, is that really possible (I didn't know I could start having my credit history just like that). How do I know if I have a credit history? Am I in big trouble now? Should I start panicking about my job possibility?

Your credit history should have nothing to do with your job opportunities. Relax.

Credit histories are compiled when you have business with a company that reports to them, such as credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, etc. Usually cellphone bills do not show up on credit reports unless you are seriously pastdue and goes to collections. You can find out your own credit history as long as you are over 18 (you have to be 18 to sign a contract) and go to annualcreditreport.com. You are allowd 1 free credit report each year from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. It is unlikely that your job application was affected by your credit history or lack thereof.

As everyone mentioned, credit scores shouldn't have anything to do with your job.

However, if you want to work on your credit score, you can do this a variety of ways.

If you have student loans, paying those on time will greatly build up your credit. Also, making payments on a car or home for 1 year will do wonders for your score.

If you make payments on something expensive for a minimum of 12 months, it will be great for your credit. You have to stick to something long term though.

Many employers request a credit report. Your lack of a credit history probably did not provide the information they needed and they may now be calling individually to check your references, etc. That, of course, takes longer.

You do need to learn about building a good credit score and how it will benefit you from now on. Congrats on graduation.

Contact the job.

Equityshare77,

This is what you do. Contact experian and request for your one free credit report and have a look at your credit report. Actually, if al the credit you had was a cell phone contract, no big deal. Relax:)

Credit history is basic on things such as credit cards and loans. Cell phones don't make a blip on you record unless you never pay the bill and let it go outstanding. Everyone has a credit record. There may not be anything on it but we all have one. It sounds like you would be considered to have no credit from what little history you have mentioned. As far as a job not hiring you because of your credit history, your credit history shouldn't;t have anything to do with your qualifications. I personally have never heard of an employer checking your credit history to determine your qualifications. If you are worried about your credit history there are plenty of ways to get a credit report. I will post a few website to help.

Employment doesn’t affect your credit score, neither do late phone payments. A phone company isn’t going to report you to the credit agencies for not paying on time, only if you go into collections.

Revolving accounts will affect credit history like credit cards and car loans.

You shouldn't have a problem getting a job if they check your credit history unless it's pretty bad. Unfortunately most of the bills you pay don't report to the credit bureau's unless you are not paying. Some exceptions are car payments and house payments and some credit cards.
Go to annualcreditreport.com to find out what you history is like exactly. Everyone is entitled to ONE FREE credit report each year from each of the 3 credit bureaus. do not got to freecreditreport.com they are a ripoff to make you think you are getting it free when they really want your money!

ps.call that company! don't wait for them to call you!

Request your free annual credit report and see whats on it. Here is how to do it. http://www.badcreditfixup.com/free-credit-report.php

Pull up your credit report with one of the 3 major reporting agencies. Get your score and go from there. Yes...those cell phone payments count as well as your maintenance of your checking account.

The jobs probably won't help your credit history at this point. Furthermore, the late payments probably won't hurt unless they were 30 days or more overdue. You have a legal right to a free copy of your credit report from all 3 agencies once every 6 months or year (can't remember which) just don't fall for any of those offers that make you pay for a membership. You also have a legal right to a credit report EVERY time you are denied credit for ANYTHING. The 3 agencies are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion; you should check out their websites.

Your summer jobs may or may not have an effect on your credit - on a credit report, it measures your debt to income ratio - as long as this figure is good, your credit score isn't going to be negatively impacted just because you've had a few summer jobs in fact.

Your cellphone being late, on the other hand, may have an impact on your credit rating. Were you thirty days or more late paying your cellphone bill, and was this account ever assigned to collections? Most people don't realize that a delinquent account doesn't go on your credit report unless you were 30+ days late. For someone without established credit (like yourself) even a few of these marks can hurt.

A checking account doesn't register on your credit report unless it is in collections, has been charged off, settled, or someone has sued you because of a deficiency. However, a checking account doesn't build credit either.

Another tip - you're entitled to one free credit report per year by federal law from all three major credit bureaus. I will give you the link below.

P.S. - Contrary to what people on here are telling you, it is not uncommon for a prospective employer to run a credit report. (Probably because most people on here are under the age of 16 and have only applied to jobs like McDonalds)

Try this website:

http://www.freecreditreport.com/

You will have to pay for an actual score, but you can see what if anything is on your credit report. You are entitled to a free report once a year.

Little_Fatty
Why dont you go to freecreditreport.com and check your credit score. You can do it for free if you cancel in time. That's how I found out about my credit score. And I dont think summer jobs and cell phone plna can offset your credit record. Its usually about things like pay your bills late, have a negative balance.
