Credit score?
I have a credit score of 550 and I am trying to get it up. I have paid off the majority of all the stuff that was bad on it except a few Dr. bills. I tried to get a home loan and they told me that if I just had more revolving credit, I would be able to get a loan. How can I get more revolving credit, if I cannot get another credit card to do so. I have 1 and I have tried to get another and no one will give me one. Does a prepaid credit card show on your credit report? How about a checking account does that show on your credit report?
I just want to know what I have to do to fix this.
I have been paying my bills on time and my score has gone up 25 points in the past 3 months. I just want to know what else I can do to make it go up higher, faster.

one option to get revolving credit not through a credit card is to buy something that is financed through a separate company. Maybe buy at TV from bestbuy and do the financing they offer, or buy furniture and finance through the store finance company.

Getting a pre-paid card can increase your credit score. Other ways to increase your credit score are:

- maintain a credit in your credit card below 50% of the credit limit.

- Pay atleast the minimum payment on time. The best thing to do is call your credit card company to setup automatic minimum payments withdrawn from your bank.

- If you have old collection notices on your credit history, then you can write a letter to dispute them.

I found a link that will give you more tips on increasing your credit score. If you have bankruptcy, chargeoffs, evictions on your credit score, then there are some tips in here…

Score can be raised easily by small, easy to handle cards such as belk, target, wal mart etc... keep a small balance and make all payments on time and slightly over. This keeps your revolving credit up, with easy to manage payments.

first, be patient. continue doing what you are doing. don't be in too big of a hurry and make a poor decision.

with respect to some of the other answers, there is misinformation in them. you CAN get a free credit report - you just need to know where. go to ftc.gov (federal trade commission) and follow the links. you are entitled to free credit report once a year. also, if you are turned down for credit (as in the case of the credit card) you may request one for free. you should have received a letter from the lender who turned you down telling you which credit reporting agency they relied on.

having an additional revolving account or credit card WILL in fact help increase your score - as long as you stay current and don't max it out. you may try a department store or national clothing brand. they are generally pretty easy and most of the time you'll save 10% on your first purchase.

Have you tried the Imagine Mastercard? It's pretty good. You do have fees, etc., but they increase your limit every single month. They auto draft the money from your account each month, so ... Also, you may want to try Orchard Bank. My scores are pretty low too (one is below 500) and the other two are almost at 600. It takes time. Everybody tells you that you need more credit, but nobody will give you any credit. Do you have a bank? If so, do they offer a pre-paid card that reports to all three bureaus? That's your best bet.

Just FYI, we bought a new house last March. I went through one lender and they denied me for the same reason. Two weeks later I got a call from a realtor that I had talked to months back. I didn't even remember him. We closed on the house within three weeks. It was a piece of cake. Best of all, we got 100% financing through an FHA loan and have a fixed rate of 5.5% on a 15-year loan. Our payments are slightly higher than a 30-year loan, but not much highter. My point is, what one person can't do for you the next person can. It all depends on who you know. I had one judgment on my credit and had to pay that off before we could close - that was the only requirement the lender had. We paid our earnest money of $300 but got that back after we closed. Just pray about the situation and when it's time for it to happen it will happen.

*** EDIT ***

There really is no quick-fix to raising your score ... not overnight or within a weeks time at least. Not that I am aware of anyway.

My sister is a finiancial consultant and she told me to go to MYFICO.COM they have a credit calculator that lets you pick different options and they thill tell you how every single move will effect you credit score. All virtual, so you can plan your next move to be the one that will raise it the most

lovely
I'm going through the same thing! Ive been dealing with Lexington law firm you should check out there website and give them a call. They have got 3 doctor bills erased off my credit without me doing anything! I pay a monthly fee but it's worth it. www.lexlaw.com call them and visit their website then let me know what you think! Good Luck!

also I applied for a credit card with first premier bank they gave me a credit limit of 300. I pay it every month with auto draft from my checking so it will be on time. things are looking better for me.

ADDITIONAL

You can reapply with first premier after paying off your balance. They will take you back trust me! If not try salute however i have heard a lot of bad things about them. Then there is centennial gold card. Rent a center will only verify your history with them they don't report to the bureaus, that's why you don't need credit to open an account with them.

Well anyone telling you that you can qualify for a home loan if only you had one more credit card is either lying or trying to give you a subprime loan with an exhorbitant interest rate (over 12%). Your score will need to be at least a 620 to qualify for a loan with a decent rate now.
Keep paying your bills on time and as those old debts that you paid get older your score will continue to increase, at which time you'll be able to qualify for more credit.
