manny | Credit score dropped. confused.? |
I recently made applied for an auto loan and was denied. I signed up for unlimited up to date credit report monitoring through my bank. I check my credit report twice a week every week. I have become recently obsessed with fixing my credit report. Now the problem is my inquiry was 3 days ago. This morning I check my report and my score went down 24 points. I specifically looked at everything on the report and nothing changed; no dates, lates nothing. The only change in my report was that inquiry. How can one inquiry bring your score so low? If figured it lower by 10 points max. but 24? when I contacted the bureaus and the credit check monitoring program, no one can answer my question. 24 point is a lot for one inquiry. I am confused. can someone help me understand? thanks |

Part of your credit score is the amount of credit that you have available vs the amount of debt.
As the economy scare worsens, credit card companies are lowering the maximum available credit on cards which will increase debt to credit ration which lowers FICO scores. |

There's a certain amount of flux in your credit score due to creditors reporting at different times. Score calculations are also based mostly on the past 24 months -- maybe something aged beyond the 24 months and isn't counting as much in your score calculation.
But the real question is are you looking at a real FICO score or a Fako score? Credit monitoring isn't necessarily giving you a real, up-to-date FICO score. If you are paying for that monitoring service it is a waste of money. And you definitely don't need to check your report on a weekly basis.
If you have derogatory items on your credit report, work on settling them. Start with the newest and work back to the oldest. Paying off derogatory items won't improve your score, but paid old debt looks better than unpaid and creditors look at your whole report.
Space out your free annual credit reports (one credit bureau every 4 months) to review for errors. Pay all you bills on time and your score will take care of itself. You really don't need to check your score more than once a year, if that often. It takes at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history to improve your score.
But if you want to check your score, go to MyFico.com. You will get real, up-to-date FICO. |

That does seem like a lot for an inquiry to lower your score. Have you been charging more lately? If your ratio of credit used to available credit worsens, your score will drop. If that is the case, charge less or call your credit cards and ask that they up your limit...that will improve your ratio of debt used. |

It was a hard pull and the dealer may have shot gunned your credit and they may have reissued it in their system for approval and it may never show up in the report |

Ok first of all, every time you pull your credit report your beacon score drops. I'm not sure how much but if you say 24 points then that sounds about right. You can check your credit report frequently without pulling your score, just don't pay that extra fee and you can see the rest of it without your beacon score dropping. Once a year you can also get your credit report for free but no beacon score is attached. You don't need that to see what you owe creditors.
Also, your credit score will automatically rise when you keep paying your monthly bills (mortgage and credit cards, etc.) on time. If you have a credit card, make sure the balance owed is half than what is available. If it is over half, your credit score will drop.
Make your payments on-time. Infact, if you only pay the minimal then it will take you longer than what the contract says to pay off due to daily interest rates. |

Last I was told by Equifax reps was that an inquiry will hit you up for 8 points.
Being the end of the month just passed, I would wager that one of your current/older creditors updated something because some do it on a monthly basis. If you have an account that last reported a good payment 24 months ago, then that record would be dropping off for FICO reporting purposes. Perhaps something that paid off back then or something. That's one less good thing to report, so the score drops a little.
Don't be so obsessed with your score. All a high score means is that you are good at giving other people your money. Don't make the mistake of equating a lower score with bad credit. They are not always same and a real bank knows this.

You checking the report too often is bringing the score down. You are considered an inquiry every time you look into it. The smart thing to do is check it twice a year. Work on the problematic areas and once they are resolved you go check it again at the end of the year. |

Well first of all, stop checking your score so often.I would check to make sure that the credit report monitoring didn't put a ding on your credit. Normally you are allowed one to two ''free'' looks a year without penalty. It could also be that it just took sometime for you score to reflect the change from when the dealership looked at it. What about other debt?? Have you checked to make sure that no one else is using your social security number? Credit card applicants will sometimes check before sending you an application. You can get them to stop if you see that is happening by contacting them. My point is, there are so many things that can make your credit score vary. My score is very high and I was denied by 2 banks at first for my car loan. Sometimes it just doesn't make sense. With all that is going on with the banks they are not just handing out loans anymore. Hope this helps. |

running your credit check decreases it as well. which means apply for many things |

If the inquiry showed up on your credit report, then that's why the score dropped. Scores aren't scored every day, just when you pull them.
The score saw the inquiry on your report and gave you less points than it did the last time you checked. |
