A_H_lady | Credit score issue? |
I need to buy a car ASAP and im scared my interest rate could be high b/c i have an unpaid charge from years ago due to a bill never arriving (i was living in someones home and they said they never got it and the credit bureaus werent hearing it so i got mad and never paid it).
My questions:
1. should i call the merchant and say if i pay this will u take it off the credit bureaus score on me or should i call the credit bureaus each and ask them?
2. if i get this sorted out within the next 3 days, when do you think everything will clear in time for me to go into an auto shop and when they run my report nothing negative shows up?
Thanks very much for your help! |

First of all you can't just "call" the credit bureau and get something taken off. It doesn't work that fast or that easily. That's why people are always checking their credit report and making sure it's "clean". First of all you have to write them and you have to have a legitimate reason for challenging the charge. Sorry but your's doesn't sound so great and do yourself a favor and NEVER tell a creditor you didn't pay because you got mad.
Second of all the issue will be WHO is the bill with? If it's with a bank, loan company or credit card company it'll look bad. If it's just a cellphone bill or doctors bill or something like that, then it wouldn't be as disasterous. It is also bad if your uppaid bill is large, of course if it's small and all your other bills are being paid on time, it won't be as bad. Get a copy of your credit report so you know what's on there.
All inquiries with the credit bureaus must be writing. For more information this is very helpful;

Remember there are 3 different credit bureaus and many times the creditor you are having "issues" with might only report to one of the agencies or none of the agencies. It all depends on who your creditor is. Also, if your current car company pulls a "Tri-merge", that means they pull credit reports from all three of the credit bureaus. Get a copy of that report so you don't have to imagine the worst! |

I doubt 3 days would make a difference, but click on this link to get a 30 day free trial to monitor your FICO credit score (cancel before the 30 days are up), and it tells you if there's any change to the score. Hope that helps abit!

Get a copy of your credit report and see what is there. Chances are that debt has been sold to a collection agency. You will have to negotiate with them to settle the debt.
You can ask for a delete for payment -- some will, some won't. If the item isn't removed from your report, paying won't improve your score. That late payment already damaged your score. Derogatory items stay on your report for 7 years from date of deficiency.
Even best case and you get the collection agency to remove the derogatory, it will still be 60 days minimum before your report would be updated.
You may as well prepare yourself for higher interest rate on that car loan |

You are NOT going to get this sorted out in 3 days. The first thing you need to do is get a copy of your credit report report and see what is on there.
If it is on there some merchants will work with you and some won't. I had one years ago who removed a bad mark once I had paid them the "cost" of them trying to collect the debt. |

Credit bureau won't just remove it even if you ask them to. Once you pay the bill, it will show that the debt is paid for. However, it'll still show that it took you a long time to pay it.
It's going to take some time to get things sorted out with your credit history. You'll prob get a car loan........they give them to bankrupt people all the time........but it'll be at a higher interest rate.
NEVER let any bills go unpaid, regardless of the reasons why. |

You can't get your credit score changed fast enough to help you buy a car. My advice? Contact the credit card company, calling the merchant won't do any good. You have already been turned over, and make arrangements to pay the bill. Then go to an auto dealer that will finance the car for you. Be honest and tell them you have paid the old obligation. You can get a loan from the Auto Dealer easier than anyone else at this point. Dealer's remain liable for paying off the car if you fail to make the payments, thus your credit won't matter as much. You must have a good job and be there awhile to get the loan. If you don't, then someone you know with good credit will have to likely be a co-signer. Hopefully, your parents or a sibling will do this for you. Good luck! Don't worry about the interest rate now, after a year of not missing a single payment, and paying off the old obligation, you can refinance the loan if the rate is too high. But at least you got the car which you need now. |

the score takes years to fully change based on new info...so no, it wont change in time for your car purchase....however, one bad charge will not greatly change your score...you should be fine..it thats the only time you have a late payment. |

You mean you still haven't paid it? It takes quite a while for something like that to get fixed. I had something like that when I got out of the Navy in 2003, I paid off the accounts in 2004, and my credit score is just this year back up into the 650 range. Before that, my credit was excellent. So if you still have an unpaid account, I would imagine your score will be low for several more years after paying the account off. You should still be able to get a car, though. A lot of dealerships don't necessarily require a high score, but you will have a higher interesr rate. |

Good luck with trying to call the merchant because even if they approved your request it will take months before that charge is removed. One way would to dispute the charge since almost every credit report contains errors. If you do find an error with the charge such as amount, creditor name, dates and etc you could dispute it. By disputing the charge it becomes invisible from credit requests for a short amount of time. Hope that helps.... |

i hate to tell you, but even if you did either of those two things, it takes longer than a few days to get something off your credit report. if you want to pay the merchant, then do that. request that they correct your report so that is states that you did indeed pay the loan off, even if it's so late. then, you can check with each of the credit bureaus to see if it's been done correctly. you might be able to get it fixed in a short period of time, but i think 3 days is too soon. companies like that tend to move like slugs when they "have" to do something. |

I am not an expert here, but a couple of things. You do not say how much your unpaid bill is. That will make a difference. Even if you were to pay it today it is still a ding against your credit - as a late payment - and history can not be removed from your credit, unless it was put there by error. If you pay it they can only report it as paid. Even correcting errors takes considerable time to be cleared up on your credit report - up to 90 days. |
