I giggle every time I see questions like this..then read responses like paul w's!
So tell me Paul....what part of the question didn't you read? You see that part where he says "no job"....or the part that says "no house"?
Where is he gonna get $60k to pay off these debts? And what is CAB? Do you follow the yellow brick road, past the singing midgets and funny colored horses to find this CAB? What will they do when he gets there?
The only decent advice in this situation is Bankruptcy. Simple Chapter 7...in a couple of years he's back on his feet rebuilding his life.
Your way? Maybe after 15 years of harassment calls and lawsuits he MAY see some light.....

DO NOT GO BANKRUPT, speak to a debt counsellor through the CAB, they will help you with letters and agreements with your creditors. Don't go to anyone who suggests taking out a loan with them or charges a fee to clear your debts, they're only after screwing you further into the ground.
Bankruptcy is the absolute last straw, CAB is the first.

Apply for a bankruptcy petition,to get the creditors off your back. Then start looking for a job and renting a place to live. Never give up, think that you have just left a bad patch and started a new one. Good luck ! |

Change your phone number, do not answer collector's calls or letters. Your credit will suffer for a while, but every state has a statue of limitations, and they will write it off. Serves the banks right for being so greedy. Good luck. |

Go to council and get an income & expenditure payment done. Under no circumstances visit a debt management company. Only debts you must pay is Priority Ones. Council tax, tv licence , all the rest of them can wait. These are the 2 you can go to jail for. Register as homeless, you will be put in a bedsit for a few weeks, then be offered council housing Accept it! you will get full rent/tax rebate.
If your registered as unemployed the next bit is very important.
Go to council and get them to take £3 per week of your benefit towards tax arrears (Max they can take).Set up standing order for £8 per month towards your arrears. You are now paying £20 a month. They can no longer send balliffs after you for this debt. . As to the non priority creditors
They will send letter upon letter wanting payment, never offer them anything, they are very reluctant to declare you bankrupt
Do not enter into a monthly repayment plan with them! Even if it is 1p a month. You need advice, your 60k debt exists only as long as you let it :) Mail if you need more info |

I think that it would be best if you went bankrupt if your that deep in debt. At least then you'll be free from your debt and, if your lucky you'll be discharged with in six months to a year.
My friend went bankrupt last year and it was the best thing she ever did. She got discharged Sept 06, and now she has a full bank account.
The only drawback is that at the time you lose everything, but you'll get it all back if you keep your nose clean. |
