Debt Collection and a new Checking account?
About six years ago I experienced total financial devistation. An ex really did a number on me financially. I have a fair amount of outstanding debt and I haven't had a bank account since that time either. I want to start getting back to semi-normal and open a checking account (the bank will open one for me..I already checked), but my mother doesn't think it's a good idea. She says it will show new financial activity and flag the collectors of the debt I still owe. Most of these compaines haven't even attempted to contact me in years. Is it possible that if I open a checking account now, i'll no longer be "flying under the radar" with the collection agencies?

no, every quater the agencies will run your social and if they find that you will have an account chances are if you still owe money they will garnish your bank account. i just went through that and if they dont get enough they will head for your wages

Your mother is probably not the person to get financial advice from, unless she's a top notch accountant?

If you want to establish proper credit, you have to start with a checking account and repay your debt. If you're ready to do this, then do it. But there's really no other way around it.

It sounds like you're not paying your debts. If that's true, be sure to have a plan to address your debts when you open your checking account.

Yes, your moms is right. You will open up a channel for creditors to find you.

So your idea of "getting back to semi-normal" doesn't include paying off what you owe?

Yes, opening a checking account may go on your credit report. Your current creditors may or may not see it.

Regardless, you should start working with these creditors on a payment plan, because as long as they keep telling the credit bureaus that yours is an "active account" then your debts will never drop off your report.

It will take years for a debt collector to find you, go ahead and open the account.
The only debt collectors that will take out of your checking account is student loans and they give you every oppertunity to pay prior to that.
also, in one year some of your dept will disapear, the 7 year rule still applies for many depts.

ellenburgmike
better watch out........they are always reporting new accounts to debt collectors.......been there......done that........beware

Your mom is correct on that one. If you open an account you will be required to give contact info, the collection agencies (what I do for a living) can access that info. Why not start to repay the money owed? After years companies are more likely to offer settlements, and offer you options on repayment. Good luck!

cricket
a bank will not give out your information because this is against the law at least i know my bank dont unless i give them permission to do so, so dont be worried you are alright, have a nice day.

Megsee25
This is true they could garnish your accounts.

I use to work in the collection area for many years, and I would not be worried unless you have some kind of garnishment hanging over you, or may be tax levee. Hopefully you can start off with a clean slate and get your credit score up around 700 or above! Good luck to you :)

corsettesandkimonos
Banks do not report your account activity to the credit bureau, so unless they are sharing limited information about you with other agencies, you will not get notified. If you have not recieved calls from your past debtors, it's probably because they "charged off" the account(s), which means they wrote it off as a loss, but it will still report on your credit report as bad debt. They just gave up pursuing you.

ron
it will flag collection agencies and you will get alot of calls and letters from collectors, i know happened to me. you need to hire a debt consolitator to handle all the collections so you only pay a little each month, its your best bet to get out of debt without costing you an arm and leg. or you could just put your money in a safty deposit box at the bank then they wont know about all your money.
