Debt Consolidation?
I have several credit cards, all of which have substantial balances (totaling about $14,000). I'd like to contact one of those debt management programs to see if I can consolidate my bills and get this crap paid off once and for all, but I don't want to get mixed up in some scam or something that is going to hurt my credit score, which is a relatively good 704 right now). Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with these things? Or a company that you can recommend? I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Yes it can be done and dependent upon your credit score and income can be secured or unsecured. The problem with this is most people will then again realize that they have credit available, and then max out their credit cards again, putting them in a worse condition than they where before the consolidation. It is an ongoing cycle, and human nature. Your score will take a minor hit for about a month unless of course you decide to use them cards again. If you do this would suggest cutting up all the cards except one, and lock that one away for only emergencies.

Savannah,

There's a good article at eHow on steps to take to begin tackling your debt. Take a look at it:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2326032_avoid-escalating-debt.html
How to Stop Escalating Debt

It includes information on companies that can help you with debt consolidation and reduction.

You can also look here for tips on earning some extra cash online:

How to make money on the internet, scam-free

Lastly, here's an interesting alternative to conventional lending...getting a "social networking" loan from Virgin Money (from the same folks who run Virgin Airlines):

Social Loans from Virgin Money

Hope these help.

if you consolidate your debt you are taking unsecured loans And making them a secured debt,Meaning they can take your home if you dont pay. You are better off paying the way you are or talking with the card companies yourself to see if the can give you a better rate.

Opt for a debt consolidation loan: The easiest method of getting a debt consolidation loan is to utilize the equity of your home. Equity of your home is calculated and determined by the difference in the amount you have paid and the amount you owe. If the amount you have paid is more than the amount due, you can use it as collateral. This allows you to borrow money on lower interest rates. Besides, you also get tax benefit on this type of loan. Consult your tax advisor before opting for this loan.

Use unsecured loans: If the equity in your home is not adequate or you do not own a home, go for an unsecured personal loan. These loans are more difficult to get, but once you are approved, you will benefit from the lower rate of interest with this type of consolidation loan.

There are various debt consolidation programs, which gives you a lot of options. You could either select a paid service or go for the many free services available.
