Debt Management?
Has anyone else on here used Payplan? Are they good? How are you coping with debt problems? I have serious debt problems and a friend advised me to declare myself bankrupt. Is this a last measure?

I can's answer the Payplan part... but...

Without knowing the specific ceircumstances I can not comment too much but generally declaring yourself bankrupt should be looked at as a last resort - the reason being that it can have a long term impact on your financial status/finances.

I would suggest you look for advice in the sites I list below.

For more details I would strongly recommend www.fool.co.uk (UK site) of www.fool.com (US version).

generally offers good advice on dealing with debt and has good resources/info about bankruptcy.

If your UK based the citizens advce bureau can provide some good help.

Try www.cccs.co.uk (they are a registered charity) and deal with debt counselling..

There are many people out there who will help for free (but beware of some "professional" agencies as they charge fees etc that are not clear.

All the best with the debt situation.

Yes it is as you will never get credit again including mortgages etc. people have this misconception that by declaring yourself bankrupt you don't have to pay your debts, this is not true, you may lose your home and your car etc.

There is a service called Money Advice, I used them many years ago and they were great. They give advice over the phone re court cases etc and also contact the people you owe money to on your behalf to negotiate payment, I would try this first.

Hi

I've just had a very quick look on the Payplan website, and at first glance it does appear that they offer a free service.

But on reading some of the information on "How are our IVA's funded" it does state that you are will be paying a fee to cover putting together and supervising the arrangements.

Please contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau who can make all these arrangements for you for free. They will complete a budget sheet with you that details all your income and expenditure - and that prioritises your debts.

This is exactly the same calculation that is used by companies such as Payplan, and also the Courts, if your debts become so bad that you are taken to court by anyone you owe money to.

Once the budget plan is completed then you will have figures that you can submit to whoever you owe money to, and in most cases will agree to stopping adding interest onto any outstanding debts and accept your offer of payment schedule.

As I said, CAB can sort all this out for you and contact people you owe money to to make arrangements. Please do this for free otherwise you will be making payments each month or week and not all the money paid out will be paying off your debts.

Bankruptcy is an option, but only if your debts are substantial and there is little hope of you being able to pay them off. However, this will cause problems with your finances in the future and your ability to have credit, get a mortgage etc, and also it is quite a costly process as well.

Hope this helps.

Avoid yourself in declaring bankrupt. Take an advice of a debt management company.

Mozey
Go to www.cccs.co.uk. They will help you through your difficulties and are government approved.

Do not declare yourself bankrupt; this is not a good option.

Once CCCS has worked out a plan of action for you, your creditors will be convinced you are willing to tackle your debts. Act now. Don't let matters get any worse.

I wish you all the best.

bankrupt is not a good solution. So take a advice to a debt management company and they provide you the advice to how to solve your problem. So don't feel bad and contact a debt service company.
