Debt collector won't collect!?
Ok, so I have an old credit card that went into collections last year while I was in college and poor. The bill was only 500 bucks, and now I want to pay it off and get it removed from my credit report. Trouble is, theyre not sending me any bill for it! (whoever heard of a debt collector that won't collect!). I found out the collection agencies company and emailed them. A guy emailed me back telling me to call him. I do NOT want to give out my phone number to them or have any phone contact for very obvioius reasons. I sent them a registered letter offering to pay in full in exchange for a deletion letter. No response. I sent another email 2 days ago. No response. I dont' know what else to do! I need this off my credit report by august for law school loans. I'm willing and able to pay, I just dont know how!
Additional Details
just to clarify, i dont care if it stays on my report marked as paid, i just want it to be marked that way!

you can still pay for it but it wont come of your record. so just forget about it.

jolyth_a
It is not going to come off your credit report. It will be there, albeit showing paid, for the next 7 years. Try contacting the credit card company directly.

Doctor Deth
call back the original company - they'll be glad to not have to pay the collection agency 1/3 of the $500 if you're willing to pay them directly. It's not going to be removed from your credit report - it will just show paid - IF they update the credit report by August

Just because you want to pay, if they don't agree to delete this item off your credit bureau, although you pay them, it will still show on your credit. No way to get pass this unless they agree. You can eventually try to dispute it later.

Heidi
You might try contacting the credit card company directly, and tell them that you are unable to contact the collections agency.

Once it's paid, it probably won't be "removed" from your report, but it will be changed to reflect "paid/current" status.

What state are you in? The statute of limitations on the debt might have expired. If it has, then no one can legally collect it.

Dispute it with the credit reporting agencies... If they don't verify to them they will need to delete it.

debt collectors get off being nasty to people
have a lawyer do it for you

jackson
Get a paid for credit report if you have not already. It will have your old account number and direct contact number. Some times they will deal with it or at least shift you to whoever they use for collections.

The collection agency is not really set up to deal with letters or emails. Just give them your phone number and call. If they called you for the money....... no biggie as you are willing to pay.

Make sure you get all of this in writing so you can send this on to the credit agencies. The paid for report will have all of the information in regard to how to go about this.
