Debt collectors can work with you, so you can make an affordable monthly payment to let go of your debt. This happens often to many people, and MOST debt collectors are pretty good about accepting any type of payment you can make. Bottom line they just need their money. They usually settle for the monthly payments for a few months, and they after about six months they'll give you a renegotiated sum that you can either pay off completely right then and there (if you can)... OR you just continue to pay your monthly payments. |

First of all, check to see if you are actually in debt. If you are, make them an offer and put it in writing. They must accept your offer but be sure that you can afford to keep up the payments on that offer (UK)...................... |

Do you have a copy of any correspondence that lead you to believe you had cancelled your provider?? I would dispute the payment if you do.. Go to the citzens advice and dont hand over ANY money till they tell you what to do. |

Yes you can call them and set up an installment plan to pay the debt if you do in fact owe the money to them. Most of the time if you tell them that you can only pay $5 a month then they have to take it and won't turn down the money. |

Contact the collection agency and dispute the debt. If it turns out that you do owe it you can make payment arrangements with them. |

You may be able to fight it, since the service was supposed to be cancelled. If you do end up having to pay it, when you contact the debt collector, sometimes you can negotiate the money owed. Tell them you have so much that you can pay right now. Ask them, if I pay right now, can we lower the debt or sometimes, if it's a good chunk of money you are paying out they will take that money and cancel the debt all together. If they don't allow, that, because some collectors are real sticklers, because they get a commission on what debts get paid. You can set up an installment payment plan. I don't know how much a month it will cost you, but you can definately do that. Hope that helps! |

the only reason you would owe them money on a contact that was cancelled would be if you did not carry out your contractual oligation with them, if not you need to speak to them
it is alwasy best to ring the company and tell them your situation, if you are honest wththem, they ususally come to an arrangement that is easliy affordable by you |

If you cancelled early that may be where the debt is coming from. They may demand the full amount or ask for more a month than you can afford, but don't let them scare you. They have to accept a payment plan that you can comfortably handle. As long as you keep your part and aren't late making payments, they can't ask you for more. |

I used to be a debt collector and you are able to set up a weekly/monthly payment plan that u can afford. They will try to pressurize u into paying more but if u are firm they have to accept your offer. Debt collection companies work by trying to panic people into paying. dont panic! there is nothing that they can do to make u pay more than u can afford! remenber this on the phone with them and u will be fine! good luck! x |

Contact the internet service provider directly about the letter you have received. I used to work for a guy who was a debt collector and some of the scams they used to do to get extra money out of people was awful.
Once you have established if the claim is genuine, then you can take steps to pay off the debt. |

Sometime's they will even make some sort of payoff to get rid of the account. So it may only be like $500.00 or something like that. I would just first try to fight this and then if it doesnt work tell them you dont have the money to pay it off.

So that this situation does not occur again, may I suggest keeping records of any correspondence made with canceling a membership or service. For instance, if it's via E-mail, create a folder to put all your cancellations in.
Good luck on resolving this issue, as I believe you shouldn't have to pay. |
