Debt - how can I begin to clear it when I dont know how much it is?
My partner has several debts from before we were together. We had massive problems (not debt related) and went off travelling, I think at the time he wasnt in any state of mind to worry about debts and hoped they would just go away. Now we are settled down and want to get our lives back on track. I recently had a baby and am not working but am doing a degree. He works 6 days a week and is definatly not workshy. I have been to Citizens advice to see what we should do re. the debt. They were extreemly helpful and told me to make a list of the debt and our in / outgoings. The problem I have is that I dont know how much his debts are or who they are owed to. I have tried to talk to him about it but he doesnt seem to know much either. How can I begin to try to sort this out without having the information regarding the debts? I think most of them are probably from charges and interest accrued from non payment. I just dont know where to start. Sorry for rambling on but it's a bit of a long story!!! Many thanks : )

Get hold of your credit reports from experian and equifax (the two main ones).
They will list out any debts and what state they are in.

http://www.experian.co.uk/
http://www.equifax.co.uk/

It will cost a couple of quid for each and can be done on line.

Have him get his credit reports. This will tell you who you owe and how much. He needs to grow up and address this problem.

Tell him he may be able to get them cancelled altogether if they are for credit cards or personal loans taken out before 1 April 2007. The website www.bdebtfree.info will show you how.

Get all his bank statements for as long back as possible, if he doesn't have them to hand, you can calll the bank and request it. The bank may charge you £10 for them, but tell it is to trace debtors, not to reclaim charges as banks can be cadgey about giving these details.
Plus if you talk to the bank about the issue, they may be able to help you more and send you details about failed direct debits that can help you.

Next you need to sit down and pick his brain....did he have credit cards? Bank loans? store cards? student debt?

He may not remember which companies he got these from, but if he remotely remembers it could help. Next you have to ring around with all the information you have found.

This should get you started.

Get his credit report from all 3 major companies.

Daisyhill
expiron is a major credit checking company....the bank will advise you of others too

rennickelizabe
he could try and find out what companies he owes money to and see if you both can set up some sort of payment plan

i feel for you - its happened to me this last year.

i nearly lost me home cuz me boyfriend not payin rent council tax etc. and he had shitty loans out to cover himself wiv money.

i took me 6 months to work out who we ow money to by letters and fone calls. i dnt know if theres anymore out there either.

i dnt like going to the door for letters or answering it cuz i **** meself it might be baliffs or something i dnt know about.

if he wnt tell you you will have to sit and wait like i did.

my boyfriend told me theres was nothing else to pay - next day there would be a letter you ow this much.

i could have knock him out - im not one for loans or owing money etc.

the best thing to do is hold on to money - when you get a fone call or letter make an agreement straight away. make sure your house hold bills are covered too

good luck - it does take a lot out of you and very stressful.

youv gotta sit it and try and save as much money as possible to pay the crap off when i comes. i half way through my boyfriends crap already and we are on a low income too.

Regret having to sound so spineless but you both acted in an irresponsible way when spending borrowed money , thank goodness you've come to your senses and are attempting to rectify your dilemma, why not start with writing to all your credit card companies and ask for a current update , work on repaying them off, one at a time, of course, then having cleared the account Cancel the card, refrain from borrowing, ever again, from them. Will not be easy to start with but ,at least you will have regained you self esteem. good luck.

Pay $10 or $20 and get a credit check. That is where you need to start. The first step in resolving debt is identifying it. When you run a credit report through a reputable site you will get the phone numbers and addresses to all of your partners debt holders. Then you can begin setting up a payment plan. Do not use freecreditreport.com Good luck.

He should have statements somewhere for all his debts. Presumably, all the people from whom he has borrowed want their money back, and they will usually send regular statements showing how much has been paid, how much interest has accrued and how much is still owing. If he's been chucking them out, to avoid dealing with them, tell him he has to start keeping them from now on - otherwise, as you say, you'll never know how much there is.

Sorry to say but the first thing you both need to do is grow up.
Why on earth are you having a child when your not financially stable?
You have to start living by your means, which means not going out spending money on beer or take aways you don't need.
You have to work extra hours and get in as much money as poss.
Any credit you have should be put into one loan and have monthly payment which you can afford.
Make your own food, don't buy made up meals from supermarkets.
You have to live by how much money you have, don't waste it.

if u dont know what companies he owes money too, then u will just have to wait for them to contact him and then start paying.

what u could do for now, is set up a bank account o save money into, and then when the debt letters come through u can pay them straight away- or a least some of it.
