Do Credit Unions carry out credict checks??
Hi just wondering if anyone knows if Credit Unions carry out credit checks. I doubt very much that they do as they are supposed to be there to help people. I applied for a loan on Saturday and i was told that they would carry out a credit check on me?? As far a i was aware this did not happen as most people who have an account with the Credit Union normally cannot obtain credit from their bank, thus they are there to help people by borrowing other members money and the fact they are non profitable. On the application form it clearly states: This application will be subject to a full credit check? I'm not sure if they just say that to frighten you into telling the truth about other debts etc. I have never heard of a credit union saying to anyone sorry its been delined cos you have poor credit or bad debt, duh, thats why im there. Has anyone ever worked in one before cos i know if they do a credit check i anint getting it and it will make them no more different than any other bank

yes, they do credit checks. They always have. A credit union is just supposed to be non-profit so they are more willing to hand out higher risk loans.

"Willing to help people by borrowing other members money" doesn't mean throwing away their other members' money on potentially bad loans; that doesn't help people (those other members are people too!) Thus, yes, they would do credit checks for loans also. They often are more flexible than bigger banks, but they aren't there to be taken advantage of.

I used to be a volunteer member on an oversight board of a credit union in San Francisco. The difference between a bank and a credit union is that the bank lends out the bank money which is based on the deposits of depositors. The credit union lends out money which is based on the deposits of members. The members money is no more important to the loan officers than the bank money. If your credit sucks, then the credit union will not lend to you, unless there are circumstances that you can explain. They do have a human side, however, if you are a very bad risk, then you're getting nowhere with them for the same reason a bank will turn you down.

Yeah , they do. When I bought my car, I got a loan through a credit union. Don't worry, though. I was extremely in debt (like $8,000-ish) and they worked with me and didn't give me a godawful interest rate. They're a lot more people-oriented than any bank you could find. I enjoyed them so much, I opened a checking account with them. Good luck.

Of course credit unions run credit checks on you.

They have a fiduciary responsibility to the members of the CU to not recklessly lend out money.

CU's OFTEN refuse to issue a loan--see above rationale.

They are different from banks in your own explanation--they aren't in it for profit and tend to have better rates they pay and lend at than many a commercial bank.

If you can't afford a loan, you can't afford a loan--not sure why you think because you have a connection to the people giving the loan (credit union membership) that you should borrow what you can't afford.

If they didn't run credit checks they'd be in serious trouble in no time. Anytime a bank extends credit to a consumer, they must pull your credit report. That's standard. Doesn't make a difference if it's a credit union.

Of course they do. They need to be careful who they lend to.

Credit Unions most assuredly run credit reports prior to lending out money, and they DEFINITELY will deny credit to a bad credit risk, just as a bank will.

As others have stated prior - you "may" be able to appeal your case to a loan review committee. You still may be turned down.

its me woo hoo
no because your mostly borrowing your own money back of them

Some Credit Unions do not run a credit check when you borrow your own money. It's a great way to save. You can become rich by borrowing this way. That is why banks don't offer it. Bank only at crediit unions that don't do a credit check when you borrow your own money. The interest rate can be as low as 1% over what they are paying you on the secured CD. However, credit bureaus hate people who do this and count all this debt as credit card debt when it is not. Everybody should borrrow their own money.
