zeek | Do I have enough credit yet? |
I've had my credit card for about six months now, I've had a debit card since I was sixteen (i'm now 20)... I have had an apartment for seven months now, and never missed a payment. I want to apply for a car loan. I just want a small loan--about three or four thousand dollars, but definately no more than four thousand. Will this be possible?
Also, is that "freecreditreport.com" thing any good? Will it show my credit history--what little I have? Is it reliable? Does it hurt my credit each time I try and check my credit?
I'm gonna try and get an auto loan through my bank (i'm a student and have a student visa through bank of america).
If I don't have enough credit yet, when will I? How long does it take to be "established?" And... last question, I promise... What is the best way to get established fast: use credit card alot and pay off alot, or, use it sparingly and little over time?
Thanks... |

First, I want to congratulate you for showing responsiblity, that's important when you're starting out. To answer your question, unfortunately your debit card doesn't build credit since the funds are coming directly out of your account, you're not borrowing money with it to build credit. As for your apartment, the only thing that may show on your report will be the inquiry when you first applied for the apartment. Although you're paying your rent on time, it's not reporting to the 3 major credit agencies, so right now, it wouldn't be likely that you'd get approved for the loan. But don't get discouraged. What you can do that can help is enroll with PRBC. PRBC is America's Alternative Credit Bureau, providing a helpful service to the over 50 million people with limited or no credit history. If you pay your monthly bills on time, PRBC can help you build credit to qualify for a mortgage and better interest rates.On-time payments for the following bills are not reported to the traditional credit bureaus:
Rent
Cable
Phone
Daycare
Insurance
Electric
Natural Gas
Cell Phone
The only time your payments for these bills are reported to the other credit bureaus is if they're missing or late. With PRBC, your on-time payments count. You build credit for paying your bills on time, even if you have no credit history. PRBC has teamed up with Fair Issac, the creators of the FICO score to introduce the FICO expansion score which helps people build credit. Here's a link that explains more in detail:
http://www.fairisaac.com/fic/en/product-service/product-index/fico-expansion-score/
As for "freecreditreport.com", it's a decent service, but there are other services that are better ( i.e. TrueCredit). When you subscribe to a credit monitoring service it will show, what companies you've applied to, and the accounts that you currently have along with your score, and no it doesn't hurt your credit when you check it yourself.
It takes about 2 years of payment history to have "established credit. Right now, the only thing you would have is your Visa through Bank of America. The best way to build credit with your credit card is to make SMALL purchases ($20/max) and pay it off on time every month. This way, you're building credit without letting the balance get out of hand.
Hopefully, I've answered all your questions.
Good luck! |

You are allowed to check you credit once a year without it affecting your credit score. As far as a car loan depending on where you get the car you could try and see if they have a first time buyer program. But with so little credit history it could be tough. The positive though is you are not borrowing to much so your payments should not be to high. |

One thing that no one mentioned here, one of the big things they will be looking at when you buy a car ( because this is going to be your single largest piece of credit) is are you stable in a job and your debt to income ratio. Can you afford this payment on top of what you already have? Big loans like a car require income and seeing how you mentioned that you are a student, if you are a full time student, they might have your parents sign on as a co-signer just to help you out. Stay away from FreeCreditReport.com, it is anything BUT free. Good luck. |

just ask your bank mate.so long as you have always paid everything on time i cannot see why they shouldnt give you a loan.just make sure you can afford the loan payments and i hope you realise that a car can be an expensive thing to run and maintain.insurance, tax, m.o.t and gas. hope you get what you want and if you do and there is people who go to the same college as you offer to take them for a weekly fee which will help towards your expenditure.good luck |

To get your federally mandated free credit report once a year, go to annualcreditreport.com. This is the ONLY place you can get a REAL free credit report with NO strings attached. You would have to pay for a credit score, which I believe you can also get from them. The best thing to do is go to annualcreditreport.com and request your credit report from one of the bureaus, then in four months I believe you can go back and request from one of the ones you didn't already request from, then four additional months later, you can request from the bureau that you haven't requested from that year. So if you request at the end of this month from Experian, you could request from Equifax in the end of June, then request from Trans Union in the end of October. |

You need to specify your salary and how good your credit is before this can be answered. |

Last question first.. establish credit by paying payments on time for the length of the loan if you have a 24 month loan make 24 payments on time.. don't be late, don't pay off early...
It will be easiest to get a car loan if you have a sizeable down payment, and take the least amount of payments available
Say you want to buy an 8000 dollar car... pay 5000 dollars dwn in cash.... finance 3000 dollars over 24 months
leave the credit reports alone.. everytime someone checks, it affects your rating...... |

I work in the real estate business and most of the time the free credit report websites keep running your credit for you each month and that is what ruins it. Go to the financial institution that you are thinking of getting the loan from and they will run your credit for you for free. Credit unions are a little more leanient than banks when it comes to giving loans. They will also tell you...if your credit is not good enough....how to bring it up to where it needs to be fast. Depending on how much you have spent on the credit cards and paid off will determine if they are helping or hurting it. Good luck to you! |

the only way to know if you have enough credit is,to try and buy something.it sounds like your credit history is good.and yes the freecreditreport site is a good way to see.but you never know how your credit stands until you ry to purchase something. |

free credit report will certainly get you a credit report, but it will also automatically enroll you in some TriVantage program that automatically deducts about 12 bucks a month from your bank account. You have to wait 30 days after getting your report and then call a 1800 number to cancel it. It's kind of a pain. As for your credit score, it sounds like it's pretty good. Your lack of a long history will hurt you, but it shouldn't keep you from getting your loan. Use your credit card every month for something you would buy anyway (like gas) and then pay of the ENTIRE thing each month. Creditors like to see lots of activity, but low balances. |

you have more than enough credit to get a loan. and companies love to give loans to young people with spotless credit.
freecredit report is bad. it doesnt hurt to have your credit checked, but it does actually cost money. |
