Do I need a credit card?
I just graduated from a graduate program. I have never had an actual credit card, just a bank account with a credit/debit card. My BF told me I needed to get a credit card to establish my credit to get a house, etc. Should I get one? and which ones offer the lowest interest rates and annual fees?

Credit cards are the fastest way to establish good credit, you will need at least 2 but use them correctly.

By that I mean use them for every day things, never exceed 30% of your credit limit in any given month and pay them off in full before the due date.

If you follow this simple plan you will never pay any interest and your score will shoot up fast.

I actually have 2 cards that I do this with and they pay me money back every year because of the cash back rewards programs.

A credit card is good as long you can handle the responsibilty and pay everything off at the end of the month.

When we got our mortgage I had put over $30,000 on my card (no late payments), and my GF barely used hers. But she actually had a better rating because she had more diverse types of credit (student loans, car payments, etc) that she kept in good order.

That being said, if you already have established yourself as a safe risk using other methods of credit I said above, getting a CC for yourself isn't urgent, especially if you may be becoming a co applicant on your BF's at a later date.

No - dont do it. You do not NEED a credit card. Maybe ask what your bf credit rating is and how much debt he has. Also, go speak with a qualified and reputable lender first. Yeah, yeah, you'll pay off your purchases every month. The credit card industry is a multi billion dollar industry - think about it. Also think outside of the box....the idea is to not need credit for anything. The goal is to be able to own your house and be financially independent. The real estate market is in turmoil right now. Ill bet people are dying to owner finance houses to get out from under the payment. Also, try living meager until you have the money to buy a house outright. Put money in a high yeild account until you have it saved up. Your an educated person.... more educated than most of America - dont make the same decisions most people are making - your smarter than that (plus look how the average persons finances have turned out!).

It isn't true that you need a credit card to get by in life. That's what people in debt want you to believe. That's what the credit card companies want to you believe. That's what finance manager want you to believe. That's why the average person carries at least $8,000 dollars in credit card debt.

A credit history is a report card of you adult life. Don't flunk it by going into debt so that one day you can go further into debt.

And remember that one credit card or two or five credit card used wisely and paid off every month does not mean you will have a good credit score. 35 percent of your score is payment history. 30 percent is the amount owed. 15 percent is length of credit history. 10 percent is new credit. 10 percent is types of credit. So a credit card is not enough.

People will tell you to get a card that pays you back. Do you really think the money they pay back to you is anywhere close to the interest you pay them. No way.

You can get a mortgage with a fico score of zero. It's called a manually underwritten loan. The interest rates are as good as your circumstances. They take life into account rather than a fico score.

Finally, don't take advice about money from broke people.

No you don't need a credit card. The interest rate on those things are so high. If you can't handle it don't get it. And If you are a big shopper don't get it you will stay in debit.

I am 41 and I don't have one, my husband have one just in case of a emergency.

You will need to establish credit unless you have enough cash to buy everything you need/want. Including houses, cars, vacations, etc.

Sonya
you definitley should. you need to build credit if you want to buy a house or car. you have to shop around to find the card that is the best for you, because it all depends on what you are going to spend it on.

no, credit cards are bad, well only if you are not responsible

kelly
if you do get a credit card just make sure that you try to pay off that amount each month, I would rather see you get a car and make your monthly payment a credit card in just dangerous you charge it then pay 20% in intrest a month for what you purchase.

yes, you need to build your credit,
just remember the golden rule.....
credit cards are not for your benefit, they are for taking more money away from you !

So dont spend unless you can afford to pay them off in a timeley manner. Try to get cards with extended 0% APR offers

always pay on time... or you will be making your credit score worse, not better.

You don't need a credit card and you don't need to obsess with the fico score. Obsessing with the fico score brings nothing but debt.
You have to borrow money and pay it back on time to get a high fico score. You have to keep borrowing money and keep making payments on time to keep a high fico score. All you get is debt.

Pay as you go. Live on less money than you make and you will have money.

The bankers and their loyal followers are gonna tell you different but,

Debt free is the way to be!

The only time you might have to borrow money is for a home. You can do that without a fico score. It's called manual underwriting. It's not a sub prime loan. It's the way loans where givin' before all the fico score worship. You can get the lowest interest rates available.

Debt free is the way to be!
