Do banks raise credit limits on cards without you asking for it?
Its just that I've noticed by HSBC Mastercard's limit has been massivly increased. I've had it a year, kept a good credit history, but never asked for the limit to be raised.
Is this normal procedure?

YES IT IS NORMAL BUT BE CAREFUL AS THEY WILL EXPECT YOU TO SPEND MORE ON IT THE REASON THE HAVE PUT YOUR CARD UP IS BECAUSE YOUR A GOOD PAYER (SO WHAT YOU GOING TO TREAT US ALL TO LOL)

Yes it makes you spend more so they can charge more!!!

Filthy Lucre
yes...if you have a good payment history they'll do it.

Claire S
Yes. They know you are a good customer now so they are encouraging you to spend more so they have more chance of charging you interest. I have an Amex card and they randomly increase the limit without even telling you! I just sometimes notice on my statement. If you don't want the increase then you can ask them to reduce it.

Yes they do, naughty isn't it.

Christina K
Yes, to encourage you to spend more and get sucked in to the cycle of credit card debt. Only spend what you can afford to repay each month, or at least within a reasonable period. There are far too many people in the UK who have got themselves in to financial trouble by 'maxing' their credit cards.

Say what!!!!

If you pay your credit card bill on time, you will get an increase without asking for it. You are in good standing with the bank, so they know that you will pay them without any problems.

Totally - pay on time and your limits keeps rising!

Yes, you can call them and request that they don't increase your limit anymore unless you apply to have it increased.

Banks like you to feel good only in good times, but they also take away your credit limits in bad times.

Yes. HBOS raised my Visa limit without my consent or asking me, and getting put back down was a nightmare. They kept telling me it will be useful in the future, and what about a loan instead of increasing my limit...

Yes it is normal. They want you to spend more so that you will be tempted to spend more. If you do not increase your spending you have no problem and wouldn't worry about it. In fact it may help your credit rating since the percentage charged is smaller than the limit.

If you have good credit and a good payment history with that particular bank, it's not uncommon for them to do that.

Yeah they do!
