dadn33 | Do banks refund money if your card has been cloned? |
Additional Details Can I just add for all those people who 'don't understand' how a card can be cloned. I went to use it today and it was refused, phoned the bank and they told me it had been cloned at a petrol station cash machine................

Yep, They'll investigate it and depending on the amount they may have to look at CCTV where the cards been used but they will always credit your account with the amount that you have not used. |

Impossible to clone??? Pepsixxxx you should read a paper. Card cloning is easy and rampant.
Your protection is completely dependent on you reporting suspicious activity to your bank. Monitoring your account frequently is your bet protection. |

if its a credit card, they just write it off.
if it's a bank they should refund your money |

Hi I have just gone through all this with Halifax. On 6th of this month £3045.19 was spent on my debit card. It took until yesterday to get a refund.
If you phone your banks fraud unit they will set up a temporary over draft until your money is returned. When the bank asks how it was cloned you have to say you dont know. and never tell them if you left your card somewhere as the tems and conditions for your card says they dont have to pay you back if you didnt take good care of your card.
Report it to the police and things move quicker as the police give you a form to take to the bank |

Depending on who you are with, barclays automatically froze my account when they thought someone was trying to spend my money, okay, it was only me purchasing things from Amazon but the point is, they froze the account and waited for me to ring and confirm every purchase, a lot of money had been going out of my account and they were just making sure it was no one doing anything naughty.
Now, my card was once scammed by a website, I was meant to pay £37 for this software thing, but to my horror, they had taken £37 and then another £36 pound before trying to get £39, I rang the bank and my bank was automatically cancelled and a new one sent to me. The £39 ended up not being taken and dropped back into my account, but to get my other money back, I had to fill in a form and send evidence of what was meant to be paid, after a lot of fuss and saying I had not sent the evidence, they refunded the £36 pound.
I was not quite sure what they needed to know as it seemd very straightforward before i noticed on the bank statement I had that the £37 which was meant to be going to america, had gone to Isreal, whilst the £36 had gone to america and to the right person, it made no sense at all. |

Most cards issuers / banks allow you 24hrs to notice that your card has been stolen/lost or otherwise compromised. Once it has been reported, you're protected for all subsequent fraudulent transactions
It's useful to note that credit cards are much better protected than debit cards, so try to use the former for everything
A colleague of mine had his debit (bank) card stolen and 16,000 stolen from his current account. It took Citibank over three weeks to eventually refund his money
If this had happened on a credit card, he simply would not have had to pay it when the next statement came.. |

I have had fraudulent internet transactions on both my barclaycard and my barclays debit card, and both times the process of getting my money back and getting a replacement card was as hassle free as possible. The process was basically:
1) Ring the fraud line and tell them what has happened.
2) They will put a stop on the card immediately. You can no longer use that card. They might also tell you to destroy it immediately. I recommend that you don't, yet.
3) They send you a form to fill in with details of the fraudulent transaction(s). You also have to fill in the details from your card such as card number, expiry date, security number. That's why I recommended that you didn't destroy it.
4) Send the form back and they will start to investigate the fraud.
In both the cases this happened to me, they had sent me a new card and refunded me within two weeks. Hope the same happens for you! |

then you need to go to your nearest police station and report what has happened . Ask your bank where it has been used and at what time and take evidence of where you were at that time. Then check with your bank to see if you are insured. (BY the way did it leave your sight at any time?) |

yes they do dont worry..
it happened to a friend of mine that someone hacked into her account from an atm machine and cloned (so to speak) her card.. and the bank refunded her money. but it was only €250.. i dont know about large sums of money..
Best thing would be to enquire in a bank..

Just in responce to those wondering about how the card was cloned it would be likely that its a device been fitted to the cash machine. To most people they wouldn't see any difference but its basically something that is fitted onto where you normally put your card and it can scan all your card details and record them, then the fraudster can come back for it later. A good think to look out for is the green flashing light where you put your card in, cloning devices often block this out. And incase any one wonders i know this as I work in a bank, rather than being a fraudster myself ;)
The bank should refund your money without to much hassle, as some people have mentioned most banks have good systems in place to spot this type of thing and generally write to you to confirm any transactions they are concerned about. Of course some will always slip through the net, best tip is to be careful! Use your card inside a bank where ever possible or failing that in a open well lit area. And only buy from trusted well known websites |

Hi,
I don't understand how your card could have been cloned! It could be someone aware your card number and used it. You can get 100% misuse protection if you have taken this matter to your bank. But, you will have to prove that you didn't use it on particular occasions. Visit http://www.debteraserzone.com and learn some tips for handling credit cards safely. Good luck! |

cloned? How was that possible if it never left your possession? If you can prove to the bank that your card was cloned they should refund your money that you lost. |
