Do credit repair specialists really work and are they expensive?

No. There is no way to remove things from your credit report if they actually happened. If you have things that were a misunderstanding you can contact the companies yourself and ask for them to be removed. But these are scams.

You should consider a NFCC (Natl Federation of Credit Counselors) accredited firm in your area. Do a yahoo search on your city or state and CCCS. These outfits are non profits that charge minimal fees of $20 for Debt Mgmt Plans [ DMPs] and Counseling. You should always try to tackle credit first on your own as doing a DMP does ding your credit. Our suggestion of when to seek credit counseling is when you can't make even minimum payments on your cards, or you have several items in collections. If you are paying more than the minimums, you might benefit from just more credit education and we recommend viewing Lessons #1, #2 and #6 on our site. http://www.videocreditscore.com

my husband are trying to spruce up our scores and have been with Lexington Law for 5 months now, have had a total of 5 bad accounts deleted w/ all three bureaus totaling over 10k. you can do it yourself, but it is a lot to keep track of, it's all about the letter writing. i have been pleased but it takes awhile, i would say a good year before it really impacts your fico.

$99 detainer, and anywhere form 39-99 a month per person.

I will say this much, i have removed about 9 or 10 accounts from my credit report which were actually mine. i disputed them over and over until i had them removed. now i only remain with about 2 negative accounts which i havent been able to remove. like everyone tells you, you can do it on your own!!

I paid $89 I think it was and I pay $35 per month. They let you quit anytime. I used http://www.creditlawgroup.com/index.aspx?rid=r0013 and i've had 3 collection accounts removed. I was young and stupid and allowed myself to get into unnecessary late payments but i've been able to get things fixed little by little. I used that site since they have attorneys working for you instead of just trying to get it done yourself and maybe not getting the same results.

Most of them(99%) are scams.do research on the internet on what your rights are according to the state you live in .They do not pay your bills to get you into a default state so they can make deals with the people you owe.Kevin Trudea's book"credit cures they don't want you to know about" is a good college course all by itself on credit and what your rights (federal) but not state by state.State by state go on the web.

Some do and some don't but they all charge a fee (even those so called no-for-profit ones.
Avoid credit repair agencies that charge a fee to improve your FICO score by removing negative, but accurate, information from your credit reports. No one can force credit reporting agencies or lenders to remove accurate information from a credit report. Credit repair companies often take your money without delivering what they promise, or provide only temporary improvements of
your score, sometimes by removing accurate information that will reappear later.

There are too many dishonest credit counseling services in operation. Knowing that 60 percent of their clients will drop out of the program, they try to collect as much as they can upfront from debtors. Watch out for hidden fees written in the contract that allow the counseling service to keep all or most of the payments you make during the first few months as their fee. These agencies don't care about helping you get out of debt; they only want to collect $200 or $300 from you as quickly as possible knowing there is a good chance you will drop out soon.

Hope this answers your question. And like some have said, they charge you for what you can do on your own.

I quote from the 2008 edition of the Consumer Action Handbook "if the information is accurate, only time and hard work and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit report. Credit repair companies advertise they can erase bad credit for a hefty fee. Don't believe it".

They can't do anything that you cannot do yourself....for free....No one has insider secrets to removing negative info on credit reports...so don't bother paying anyone....

Whatever they can do so can you. You have a good working human brain just as much as they do. You can call up your cc company and negotiate your payments, tell them what you're able to send in each month.

Credit repair specialists are very pricey. If you go to anyone for credit repair make sure its a non-profit organization. Even after you pay off your debt, it'll stay on your credit report for 7 years but after that it falls off and you get a fresh start.

Always make sure to go to http://annualcreditreport.com to check your credit report. I believe you can get 1 free credit report from them a year.
