Do medical bills stay on your credit if you do not pay them?

Additional Details
does it effect your credit or just stay on your credit

ginnyree03
Yes, they do. How fast they appear on your credit depends on if the medical affiliation is non-profit or not. I had some med bills from a not for profit hospital, but they marked my credit anyway and even garnished my wages until I filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy !! Most of the time you can work out a payment system with them, though. Good luck !

I've known of people who have had to pay medical bills in order to clear their credit.

Otherwise, the answer is yes because the medical bill is a liability owed to someone.

Yes, they definetly do! I look at credit all day long, medical bills can ruin your credit.

firefighter_3916
They will stay on your credit for up to 7 years if they are not paid. However what most medical places do not tell you is, if the doctors office or hospital is owned by a non-profit group and you are unable to pay the bills then they are not suppose to take you bill to collections by law

freetronics
yes, once anything goes on your credit, it'll stay there for seven years, unless you can get the company to retract it.

It happened to my brother. He couldn't pay his medical bills so the hospital put it on his credit report.

hmmm...
Yes. I work in the health industry, and whenever a patient fails to pay their bills we send them to the collections agency. It has an adverse effect on their credit.

MrZ
You're darn right they do! What do you think anyway? Do you think you're entitled to free medical care??? While all the rest of us pay??? Get real.

dah pay your bill then they come off

It effects your credit and stays on it for the full 7 years. I have actually seen people be turned down for a car and house loan because of medical bills.

Contact the hospital or doctor to see if payment arrangements can be made. I know someone right now paying $5.00 every 2 weeks on a medical bill but the hospital sees this as the person trying to pay. It may take 50 years to pay it off but she is trying. As long as you are sending something, I don't think the people that are owed can do anything. Keep your receipts and check numbers and amount you paid plus a copy of the bills and address you mailed it to. This will all be in your favor.

Good luck
