The Voice of Reason Is Silenced
Do negative records really "disappear" from your credit report in 7 years?
I recently viewed my credit report, and a lot of negative/delinquent accounts and records are not on it. So is true what they say about negative items being deleted from one's report after 7 years?

Yes they do. Make sure you keep the copy of your report that shows that it is not on there. Sometimes your delinquent accounts can get sold to another credit agency and they might try to put it back on your report. If that happens then you can write to the 3 bureaus and have it deleted.

Dr. Shakar
It is illegal for credit reporting agencies to keep reporting most types of negative information for over 7 years (bankruptcy is allowed to be reported for up to 10 years) per FCR Act § 605(c). So, the negative information MUST be deleted, it is not the credit bureaus' decision and it is not up to their personal standards. If they fail to remove such information you can take them to court and seek damage in amount of $1000 per each account that they failed to remove.

Yes, 7 years and they are gone but most companies only look at your history for the past 6 months to a year.

yes, except for bankruptcy which stays on your credit report for 10 years

mss
Yes, most are cleared with 7 years. Some do take as long as 10, but most are 7.

Pinky
Yes it is, if it's like being evicted out of your apartment or not paying money on time or not returning rented movies on time that goes away but if it's something serious and criminal it's permanent.

I know that if you have filed Bankruptcy, you have to request that it be removed from your credit report.

J'adore
Nope not always. Depends on the company and their policy. If that were true I'd have perfect credit. by now.

I jacked it up when I was 18, starting repairing when I was 24, and it's still awful, all that stuff is still on there. I'm now 25... there's stuff on my mom's credit report from like 20 years ago... but give me thumbs down and believe what you want.
don't whine when you think your credit should be good and you can't seem to get a loan.

Nope, not anymore!.. In the past years just file bankruptcy.. all your debts disappeared. Now , you have to go face the court, and you will pay what you owe, and then they will garnish it from your salary, or worse take from whatever property you have. Maybe you are one of those who made it to the "cutting period".

GG
this is true but a lot of creditors get slick and on the sixth year and eleventh month they transfer your debt to a brand new collection agency and your 7 years start all over again. But yes if they dont do this, yes they do fall off in 7 years.
