Do you have to pay to own a credit card?
I am thinking about getting a credit card, so I can pay for things over the internet, and then just clear my balance whenever I use it. Would this cost me anything? Do you incur charges if you don't use a credit card?

Thanks :)

that is a "how long is a piece of string" question.

most credit card companies dont charge an annual fee anymore - unlike charge card companies. but if you use your credit card as a charge card (paying off full balance) the credit card company makes no money from you. Many have said this is not acceptalbe and are likely to start charging (possibly offset by interest paid over the year).

so the answer is mainly no, with some companies it is yes and it might be yes in the future with all / some of them.

Some places have started charging for non-use of a credit card- Lloyds i think being one- it is better to ask before you have one and always read the small print and ask about anything you don't understand. I have one or two that i don't use at all now but i don't pay anthing for not using them.
In making your decision you might like to go to www.moneysavingexpert.com who gives advice on what credit cards are what at the moment and what you can expect from them.

Louise:

First off, I don't use my credit cards when internet ordering, I use my debit card. Couple of reasons: if I have the money to spend, then I am not going into debt, if I run into problems, I can contest the charge and my bank will not pay the bill, etc.

As far as costing on a credit card, READ THE FINE PRINT. Ask lots of questions with a representative of the issuer of the card...some companies charge an annual fee just to possess their card (the nerve of these guys, like they aren't making enough money as it is....)

Hope this helps.....

Many credit cards do not have a monthly fee even know there have been talks to introduce them. There are charges if you pay in a froune money, fall to pay the bill at the end of the month, using the card to exshane money to a different currenly.

If you have good credit you can get many cards without a fee. If you have bad credit yes you can get a credit card but it usually comes with a sign up or monthly or yearly fee.

No. No and no.

You should be able to get a credit card from your current bank quite easily, that will have a sufficent balance to cover most normal payments over the internet (you may need to speak to them, or pay if you want a big balances (i.e. many several thousand) straight away without a credit history).

If you repay on time you will not incur charges.

Indeed, there are good reasons for doing this which include:

* Broadly speaking, you do get a better degree of protection using a credit card than a debit card (at least under the Consumer Credit Act)

* It can help to establish a credit rating (which is essentially a record of your ability to repay debt) which is useful when you come to buying something big and exciting like a house.

Hope this helps!

It doesnt cost anything to get a credit card, but as soon as you purchase something with it there will be interest charged. You need to have good credit to be approved by the credit card company. If you do not use it and just keep it in your wallet there will not be any charges in-cured.

some banks charge an annual fee, some don't, but in the long run you will get stung by the rates!
