Heck no! That's not the cashier's choice. I always choose credit so that if anything goes wrong I'll have a paper trail to follow. |

The choice only effects the fees to the business.
Credit fees are a percentage of the sale amount. For example a check card might cost 1.45% of the sale. Debit fees are usually a flat cost per transaction, like 65 cents.
Smart businesses know the decision point where one choice is cheaper than the other. |

NO WAY
I got a banking card that can be either used as a debit or credit transaction. Either way the funds come straight out of my bank account. If I feel safe then I will tell them debit. If the lines are long or I feel unsafe,ie someone looking over my shoulder, then I want to secure my PIN so I select credit and sign the slip. There is a store I shop @ that only accepts debit card transaction when using a card. So I have no choice but to select debit.
It's your money, so why should you let a clerk who doesn't know your business make that choice for you. |

I actually find this funny since I'm a cashier and our store's debit pads almost never work. I just select credit then tell the customer that the debit isnt' working. 9 out of 10 times that's true anyway! Once a month or so, I'll have someone pitch a fit over it. But I just tell them that I'm not allowed to reconnect the pin pad to make it work. I could do this, I have done it...then I was told that I could be fired if I do it again. Much as I hate the store, I do rather like getting a paycheck. |
