Do you think Credit equals wealth?
I see tons of questions in this category which pertain to a TOTAL obsession over credit scores, cleaning up ones score, improving scores and the like.

PEOPLE: The use of credit, especially credit cards, robs you of your number one wealth building tool (your income).

Going out and getting a Visa with a $5K limit, running it up beyond the limit, making minimum payments until 2019 won't help you. It won't help you at all.

Please reply with your thoughts as to why so many people have trouble with this concept?

Not at all. My total credit limit is over $25,000 with 7 different lines of credit, but because of my car, credit card, and student loans, I'm in debt of about $60,000. My wealth is a negative!

Credit cards can rob you of your income due to interest, but we allow ourselves to buy something and not pay it all off immediately. Credit cards can still be useful if we didn't carry a balance; and therefore, wouldn't rob us.

Even though I am in debt, I do not pay just the minimum, because I do think about how I could be in debt for decades- and I don't want that.

I think people think credit cards are evil because the masses do not use them responsibly.

Credit simply means that is money that is available to be loaned to you. It's not money that you have. As for me I am trying to get out of debt all together, and am almost there.

People don't get this because they are "sold" credit all the time. Everything from Visa commercials to financing your next new car are images seen almost every day. It has been socially acceptable and encouraged because of convenience.

money is not everything in life

Kevin C
A) massive marketing by credit card companies
b) lack of education about financial concepts

Credit equals the ability for discontented people to buy what they want when they want it. The newest, coolest, best, most enviable, etc. We live in a culture of 'instant gratification', and it is not understandable to the masses that they should save, have a little patience, and that 'good things come to those who wait'.

It really isn't a question of wealth, it is true that 'money isn't everything'. However being financially free is a good goal, and is attainable if one is willing work for it.

We do not need credit to live; save up your money and buy a good, reliable used car with cash. Cut up the credit cards and go on a budget to pay for your day-to-day expenses and bills. The only 'credit' or debt that is ok is a mortgage. But even that should be paid off as quickly as possible. Above all learn to be content and you won't need to buy new clothes every month, or a new car every other year, or the coolest new phone/ipod/computer/etc.

No but I do not base my "wealth" on money! I understand where you are coming from I think that people get overly obsessed with living in the now and not thinking about there future! i personally don't use them if I don't have the money for something then I don't get it!

I see some other Dave fans. Well done.

I am only obsessed with getting everything off my credit report. I have up until next year and then everything will fall off from being inactive/closed for the 7 years. The scores do not determine your wealth; all it does is determine your debt. I am tired of playing this stupid game to keep a credit score up. I figure if I need a loan for whatever reason, the bank can do it like they used to and check my pay stubs, bank statements etc. To me the credit bureaus are worse at reporting/updating your credit report, than those credit card companies themselves. You are at the whim of the credit reporting agencies. I have had more damage done to my credit report by these three companies than any other company. I am at the point in my life where I have all the material things I want; if I want something now, I'll just pay cash.

You are looking at this wrong. To rebuild your credit you are not suppose to run up the credit card. You are suppose to use it every month for the things that you were going to buy any way and pay it in full when the bill comes. With good credit you get a lower interest rate when you do have to borrow money. You can get a job over someone with bad credit. A lot of employers check peoples credit these days because they see bad credit as a sign of irresponsibility and they do not want irresponsible employees. You get lower insurance rates when you have good credit. When the economy is slower and they are more picky over who they give money to you can still borrow. You should protect your credit score like it is gold.

First of all, Credit does not mean responsibility. Building wealth takes real responsibilty. Anyone can get a credit card, charge hundreds or thousands of dollars and pay fifteen dollars a month towards the balance for the next twenty years. But how many people can say they've saved and invested hundreds of dollars a month. How many of us sacrifice now so that we can live like kings and queens later down the road?
Why does everyone think a credit score is SO important? A credit score is a number.... a number that is raised by borrowing and paying money. The more money we borrow and pay off, the higher our credit score. So for those of you with an 700 + credit score... congratulations, you get the stupid award for borrowing alot of money. Because ultimately that's all your credit score says about you.
And you DO NOT NEED CREDIT TO SUVIVE. Save up and pay cash. People get scared when they think of large purchases such as cars or homes. But as far as cars go, they are an investment that goes down in value, so you definately want to pay cash always for a vehicle. And you don't even have to have a credit score to buy a home. You can get the same interest rates by obtaining a mortgage through manuel underwriting. All they do is make sure you've paid your rent on time the past few years, you make enough money for the mortgage payment, etc.
Unfortunately we live in a world where the FICO score is worshiped.

Wow !!!! Excellent answer all . Credit is not wealth, but you will need some sort of credit to purchase or survive.

Just M
They used it up , to the limit , and it caught up .

Let' s say this , John ( made up name ) was laid
off work and he had no choice but use his card , because
unemployment took to long to receive , his credit card
was the only way he would've food on the table .
He is spending more money than he has .

This could be the same as doctor's bills , not receiving money and using your credit that simple ........

Plus many credit card companies want you to be in this situation , the longer it takes to pay it off , the more interest they're making .............

This is wrong either way .........customer and creditors .

That's why both words starts with an "C".

Credit equals responsibility , not wealth

Only of credit us used to get more money, liek opening a busines, ofcourse the lower APR the better, but let say that you can only get a credit for 30% APR if you manage to buye a product with taht credit and sell it for 200%, that that was a good credit no matter what
