NO! I have been with Ford Motor Credit buying cars for 15 years....never a late payment. Last time I went to buy a car I found out that our sweet Gov. Granholm changed the law that your interest rate is based on credit score not credit with the company....pissed me >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LATER

Stuff happens....especially these days! Family first and then bills....house payment, (5 yrs, $1400.00 NEVER LATE! Car payment 4 new cars (15 years never late) So because of terrible circumstance ( family illness) I did make 1 late credit card payment. 2 1/2 years ago...Under 30 days mind you. Jacked my interest rate to 29% (from 0%) On both my credit cards cuz come to find out the 2 cards were with the same credit company even tho they had different names. And in Michigan...(don't know how in other states) if you pay late on 1....they have the right to raise interest on your other cards if with the same credit company and even if you never knew they were the same because they have a totally different name. (when to read the fine print!) I believe the laws have changed very recently about this.
So anyway....even though I've paid through my *** in mortgage and car payments. ON TIME! ...I can't get a good interest rate on a vehicle to save me....but I do have credit card approvals in the mail everyday...lol

yes its fair. personally, i have bad credit and buying a car has been HELL. i can afford the monthly payments but i just could not get approved for what i wanted.
Its sucks, yeah, but its fair. My credit rating shows how irresponsible i had been with my finances and i cant say i blame the banks for not wanting to lend me money. Its my own fault. Im getting better at it and working to improve my overall credit but i know it takes time and i will have to prove myself worthy of a loan.

Unless you are paying cash, how else would you do it?

Loans are based on risk and without looking at your credit history to see how you have paid others, lenders have no way of knowing how to rate your loan.

I don't believe I have to say this, people are so uninformed. A salesman has nothing to do with getting a customer approved for a car loan. That work is done by the Finance Manager not the salesman.

Personally, I think people who finance loans should be allowed to use (or not use) whatever information is available to them when deciding what to charge you in the way of interest.

This idea that a lender is FORCED to base your interest rate on your personal General Credit Score, rather than your history with them, is an unnecessary government intrusion.

However, people need to realize that Credit Scores are becoming the basis for more than just how much money costs you. Failure to keep good credit can affect your ability to get an apartment, or a job, or any number of other things.

Don't just whine about it, do something. Your credit score is completely in your hands! Don't buy on credit unless you absolutely have to - and don't miss a payment, period!

Deliah
It is fair to buy anything based on your credit. After all thta is a record of how you handle credit good or bad.

I think the Credit Reporting Agencies screw up their
Reporting too much. I'm constantly fixing mine for
inaccuracies !!!!.

If you don't have the money to buy the car yourself, of course it's fair. Buying on credit means your credit matters. If you are financing a vehicle it is on credit - what shows on you credit report is how you are going to repay that loan. No lates = great credit risk = high probablity payments made and on time. Lates on credit report = lates on the car loan = cost of calls and letters to get payments in. Charge offs, repo's, collections etc = highly unlikely they'll get all their money = company sweats a lot hoping they won't lose money (if they do the loan at all). Some lose the priveledge of buying on credit altogether and it's all based on their track record.
Of course you can pay cash and nobody cares about your credit because you are buying it instead of the bank.

Christie
What people don't understand is that your credit history is a reflection of your character. Yeah, a person can have a run of bad luck and hard times and fall behind on bills. But someone who is repeatedly behind on their bills, maxing out credit cards, and spending frivilously is a different story. That person isn't responsible. Put yourself in the lender's position. Who would you rather loan money to - someone who has proven to be responsible and pay their debts on time, or a person who is nonchalant and uninterested in being responsible? I'm going with the first person, because I want to get my money back!

peggy m
It's your choice whether or not you agree to the terms of the lender. If you don't like the terms, don't borrow. Has nothing to do with fair.

Michelle
NO, like Tara I too have a loan with ford fairlane credit, 2 more payments and I am done!! but because I have 1 over 30 days late (over a 6 year span mind you) I am blackballed and will have high interest again!! dosent matter I paid off ALL of my credit cards, etc... its so not fair, its like if you made a mistake with credit they keep you from getting out of the hole by making you pay high interest.

Heck no, I don't think it is fair...people mess up and correct themselves. I think it should be based off of how much money you make and what your bills are. I know people would abuse that, but for someone like me who would really love to be able to get something on credit when I have no debt now would be nice.

Kris
Granholm....that is a whole 'nother forum that I could really GET going about and how she killed the state of Michigan.

Anyways, I guess it is a yes and no answer. Not really a clear one.

I have been working with Ford Credit for about 10 years now and after filing bankruptcy and reaffirming my loan with them, I have a great record with them.

However, I don't buy the more expensive cars either. I am more apt to buy the smallest car I can that can fit my family and needs.

So yes, you can't have reposessions and foreclosures and expect to get a great rate on a new auto loan. It has to be within your means.

BUT, if you have a great history with a place such as Ford credit, then they should take that into consideration and base your rates on the business you have provided them with and how well you were to work with.

I have relatives who had TONS of financial issues and Ford Credit was always willing to work with them and even give them good rates.

In todays market and with the invasion of foreign cars now, I don't think you will see too many american car companies being too stinky about selling cars. Every financial period, their losses sky rocket so I think you will be able to shop around and get a good deal.

Don't forget it is partly the salesman. One of my relatives when to Kia and got a great salesman that went out on a limb for them and got them a GREAT new car even with them having reposessions on their credit reports. He looked past their old mistakes and all that to give them a fresh start. The salesman MADE it work for them.

So I think if a salesman is not willing to go to bat for you, maybe you should shop around for a new dealership and salesman.
