Do you think it's right that an employer makes his whole hiring process based on your credit.?

Additional Details
Ok, what if the person has fell on hard times and bills got backed up judgements fell on them and no one would hire them because of such. You try to better yourself and get out of the bind your in but no one will give you a job because they think your careless with your money. I think it's plan stupied! My friend is having such a hard time right now . Her husband was out of work a couple years ago which put them in a hardship and caused there credit to turn south. She just has lost her job due to the company going under and now all she is hearing is sorry your credit score cost you getting the job. How can she get it better when she doesn't have a job to correct it. It's such a crazy cycle.

A lot of companies are doing this. The thought process is that you are more responsible, etc., if your credit is good. They do not take into consideration that things may have happened in your life that could have finacially changed--death, divorce, etc. Even your car insurance can be based on your credit now.

plaindonna
Unfortunatley, a lot of companies are now running a credit ck before they hire you. Personally, I think this is wrong. People fall on hard times and should not be punished because of it. How can you correct the situation if all you hear is "NO"?

Budlightgurl
No I don't. I have horrible credit with a lot of debt. But I have still managed to find decent jobs. It may have taken me a lot longer than the average person, but I found one. I've been denied for a job for being "over qualified". I have 2 college degrees and they figured I wouldn't stay there very long. But in most cases you will not be denied ONLY because of bad credit, there's usually something else combined.

no!

it depend on the type of job they are hiring for, if it involves a great deal of trust and/or money then yes other wise no. but it is up to the employer to do as they please. if it is just because of the credit history the she should explain that to the employer during the interview. being up front and honest will show the employer that they are trying to fix the problem

jessica
no doubt it

Mrs A
No, a person' s credit history is not an employers business, much less should he base their work ethic on their ability to pay the bills on time.

No employer bases his whole decision on a credit report, but I feel it's a valuable tool to give you insight as to how he or she conducts them self in life.

You're credit report can show more than just your credit worthiness, but obviously someone with terrible credit and a bad work history is not really worth employing, they are better passing such a person up to save them self money on training someone that may only work for a couple weeks.......

everyone can claim they fell on hard times, but that doesn't mean anything.. becuase if someone fell on such hard times and they really cared they would get whatever job they could even if it was at mcdonalds...

Rick B
no. But I can't imagine an employer doing that.

americanfreeman
an employer can do whatever he wants in hiring unless it is related to race, creed, sex, or religion

I would bet $1000000000000 the employer did not based the ENTIRE hiring decision on credit rating.

Employers have a right to check your credit. Most companies do. I would NEVER hire anyone without a credit and background check.

You can fall on hard times and still get a credit score in the high 500's.

If you have had judgments, then that means that there has been an EXTENDED period of time that you have not called the creditors for a work out agreement.

Creditors typically don't go to court for people who are trying to make very minimum payments (except for the mortgage). However, creditors will take debtors to court who:
1. Refuse to answer the phone;
2. Refuse to respond to dunning notices;
3. Refuse to respond to certified letters;
4. Refuse to make regular payment arrangements; and
5. Refuse to estalish a "hard times" payment plan.

Everyone experiences hard times. That doesn't however give anyone the right to shirk his debtors because of it. You take control, tell the situation to the people you owe, and create a plan that works for you and them. They need you because quite frankly, they have made an investment in you. They want their payback -- the one that you promised, remember?

However, just because they need you doesn't mean that you can ignore them. You have a legal duty to pay your debts. Keep the lines open between your creditors and they will work with you instead of against you.

Those who face their debts and make a way have character. These are the people employers want.

Those who knowingly and willfully shirk their debts, blamestorm, avoid responsibility, consistently live beyond their means, and play hide-and-seek demonstrate their immaturity. Employes are looking for mature people who know how to navigate life's challenges and play by the rules. That's why they need to see your credit score.

Jennifer
Not paying your debt shows a lack of responsibility and respect for money. So I think it's fine.

MSAD
Yes.

Many employers check the credit of the people they hire.

Especially - those who are hiring for jobs that involve money and goods that are easily stolen.

Those with a bad financial situation have an incentive to steal from the company.
The job market is very competitive. Employers don't have to hire people with bad credit - so they don't.

Just another reason why you should be responsible with your bills and make sure they are paid on time.
