Do you use store cards?
I was watching breakfast tv this morning, and I was shocked to see the interest rates charged by stores compared to credit cards.Do you use store cards? I had one in the past but paid it off, then cut the card up.It would be so easy to get into a financial mess with these cards. The staff at the stores are always trying to get me to have one, but I refuse.Have you ever ran up huge debts with a store card? Did you manage to pay it off?
Additional Details
Nice to see so many sensible answers so early in the morning.Well done folks.;o)

I think it's very sensible that you don't have a store card.
This time of year people are tempted to use them but it's a HUGE mistake!
I have had store and credit cards in the past but today I am debt free (except for a mortgage) and it's wonderful to live within my means and feel that sense of peace inside.
If I can't afford it - I don't buy it!

In Janaury and February more people committ suicide and get divorced than any other time of the year... there is the anti climax after Xmas, cold weather and the aftermath of STORE CARDS and debts! It's not worth it!

no. I guess if you get a discount or something it doesn't hurt to get one and pay off your balance on time.

I only have one specific "store card". It is a store that I frequent often and has a lot more specials for cardholders. However, I always pay the balance off each month because the interest is so much higher that bank credit cards.

I do unfortunately have a high balance on a bank credit card. Due to being out of work for a long time, and unable to collect unemployment, and several unforeseeable downfalls, I had to rely on credit cards just to pay the monthly bills, but I know that I will eventually pay it off.

Store cards are a rip off if you do not pay up on time. If you can pay up on the due date then you pay no interest. Although the interest rate is lower the same applies to credit cards. If you let the purchases get out of hand the balance escalates rapidly.
The store staff get a commission for each card they "sell" and the store makes money when you use them over and above the item purchased.

Ive got to admit that when I was younger I fell for it and had about 5 store cards. It was just so easy to get a new outfit and do a buy now pay later !! What wasnt so easy was paying them off. I got myself in a real mess and didnt realise how much interest they charged. Im glad to say that I cut them all up but I had to take out a small loan to pay them all off. Its all payed off now but I would seriously discourage anyone from getting any kind of store card ! x

Yes for the discount and make sure I pay it off immediately. The key is discipline....Would be silly not to benefit from the discounts eh?

No way.

depends on the card working system ..

some cards you charge them and use them in that particular store with special offers ..

and i dont know much about the other cards

morgasmuk
Leave them well alone, they charge very high interest rates, I saw one at 25%.

If your having money problems try a website like www.moneysavingexpert.com

Its completely independant, informative, you dont have to register and its very user friendly
