Does a creditor have to contact you before they place your account on your credit report?

No, some people make it hard to make contact, so it can not be required.

At the time you opened an account with the creditor you gave them permission to do so. It was in the fine print that no one reads.

As a result if you're behind and late in payments the information goes to the credit bureau without any further contact with you.

No. Your credit report(s) show a 30/90/120 and beyond 120 days late column. Each creditor submits based on their company guidelines, but late payments are reported and the client is not notified - besides, you already know if you make a late payment.

Don't you remember? They did ask you and you gave them permission (in the application).

No. You gave them that power when you applied for the credit account.

cmatthaios
No generally they let one month, or two (depending your credit status) go, and then can report the number of months missed

Technically no, but basically by law they already have, and many, many times before the even attempt to place your account on the credit report they have made numerous attempts. They have sent you many letters saying your account is late, and please resolve this before they go to collections etc.. Often times we don't take it serious, or see the severity of not taking care of this matter immediately, before it to late. And by too late, I mean (after all of there attempts) your account is now on your credit report. All of this information is in the application when you applied for an account. And most if not all people know that, if you are delinquent/late for 30/60/90 your account will placed in a negative manner on the credit report. Just the fact that it hits there, means that this information stays on your report for (7) years. So, now you have the burden of trying to retify your wrong, and now trying to rebuild your credit, essentially minimizing the negatives and maximizing the positives. Simply speaking, you need to out weight the bad items on the report, by doing better, and that will take time.
