Does a prepaid credit card help you gain credit?

popped_hemoroid
highly doubtful

because you're not borrowing anything

If you are talking about a secured credit card(such as you give Visa $500.00 and they give you a card with a 500.00 limit and it is a real credit card with a monthly bill) then yes it builds credit but at a slower rate than a regular card but with less risk of putting yourself in debt. If you can get a regular credit card, spend a reasonable amount(like 50.00 and pay it off in full as soon as you get the bill) this builds credit at a faster rate. |Good Luck!

Essentially, a prepaid credit card functions as a debit card, except that a prepaid credit card is a separate account. A debit card is linked to either a savings or a checking account. You just need to open a prepaid credit card account and deposit money, just like you would with a regular bank account. After you pay the fees, which could amount from $5 to $50, the bank then issues you a prepaid credit card.

Many banks offer prepaid credit cards under Visa or Mastercard. Other providers include Western Union, Greendotonline and Rush Card. Prepaid credit cards can also be purchased at selected stores, malls and even gas stations.

Where's the credit?

The term 'prepaid credit card' is probably a misnomer because there's no credit involved when you use it in any transaction. With a credit card, you pay with the money you don't yet have, but which your banker or credit card company guarantees for you.

With a prepaid credit card, you only spend the money you loaded the card with. For example, if you have $300 on your prepaid credit card, you can't purchase a $325 item. It's that simple.

Who can use a prepaid credit card?

A prepaid credit card is a good tool to help you curb your shopping expenses. It is also a good alternative to a regular credit card that you didn't get due to bad credit or for any other reason. A prepaid credit card lets you enjoy the usage benefits a regular credit card can offer. No. Use a regular credit card and pay the charges when the bill comes. This will ''help you gain credit''.

funny monkey
unfortunately it doesn't. bank credit cards are best to start credit. always read fine prints. be careful with companies like capitol one credit card they charge huge activation fee and other fees and start you off with a low limit. customers end up owing there balance in fees and haven't even used it yet.

only with your social security number and a credit card

Though prepaid credit cards resemble debit credit cards a lot, the two are vastly different. When you use debit cards for any purchase, your shopping will be automatically debited from your bank account. On other hand, the purchases made with prepaid cards are deducted from the balance present on the card.

The prepaid cards offer various benefits like:

Interest-free purchases

People with a bad credit history are eligible to apply for a credit card.

The credit limit varies according to the balance available on the card.

I think so if its pre-paid you already paid for it and on regular credit cards you would have to pay after and if you dont youll have interest on it which will reduce your credit score so in turn pre-paid will up your credit i'm pretty sure:)
