well....for a person living alone i mean. when i lived a home each my parents made that much (seperately) and i was the only kid living with them. we were doing pretty good.

It depends on many things. That's a pretty good salary. But if you live in Los Angeles, you are living in a run down apartment. If you live in Tampa, you're doing OK. If you have kids, good luck. It's a very frustrating thing my friend. People who should be having a good life are suffering in this economy. Unfortunately, 45K for most people IS poor. And that's why families often have two or three incomes. Just to make ends meet. |

it depends on where you live.
it also depends on your life style. your friend might live a lot differently than you do, thus thinking that $45k would not be enough. compare Paris Hilton to Lashandra at BK. Lashandra would be happy with a $400 paycheck from the government to buy a new set of nails. where Paris wouldn't be satisfied until a $4,000 check came through. |

My general purpose rule is to compare housing costs to your income.
If you can own (not rent) a home in a decent middle class neighborhood, such that the costs of the mortgage, mortgage insurance, property and casualty insurance, utilities, and taxes consume 25% or less of your gross income - then you are not poor.
If you pay more than 50% of your gross for the above, or can not afford to buy a house, you are poor.
Middle class life means having some discretionary income to set aside for the future and still have some left over for today's wants. If all your income is going to fulfill, or can't fulfill needs, then you are poor.
BTW - my definition of well off is when the house (as above) costs you less than 10% of your gross income. |

It depends where you live. On top of that taxes, any kids, car payment, and bills will eat that up real quick.
I'd say middle class until retirement... then your poor. |

45 a year is definitely difference in LA or NY than 45 in PA. It depends on where you live also on how you manage your money. If you make 45 in MD and have little and no debt, you can live a decent life. Not rich but you're not living in a cardboard either. |

I think its good. I live in Missouri My husband and myself live off of 30,000.00 year no kids or anything but we get by and i pay my own tuition for school---its nice my comm college lets us make monthly payments which is a hefty 300month.....we still pay all our bills and our able to buy food and have a lil fun every now and then...But were not like going on shopping sprees or anything. It depends on your standard of living. if your living in too big of a house or spending too much money shopping or eating out to much..you could easily call yourself poor but its really in the choices you make... LIke I dont know what we would do if we were making an extra 15,000 it would be nice....like the other ppl said it depends on the prices of housing and other expenses. i think your doing ok but who cares what someone else thinks is poor. as long as you can manage your money --you should be fine. |

If that is a one person income, then it seems a good middle class income to me. Although you will get more bang for your buck if you are living somewhere with low living expenses like the Rio Grande Valley, than somewhere with high ones like California, so depending on where you live, I can see how that person might think of $45K as being a bit under priviledged. |

Well, right now, I only make a little over 30,000. But my wife makes a lot more than me. We own our 2 story, 4 bedroom, 21/2 bath, own 2 cars, (my wife drives a 2007 Audi A3, and I drive a 2006 Subaru STi) We take care of her parents, and have 1 girl. (And 2 cats) And we still have money to buy whatever we want (For the most part) |
