Does anyone know how to clean up your own credit report ? How?

Well I see only two people here have the slightest clue what they are talking about.

Bart and Lara are correct. There are many ways to clean up your credit report (yes, even legitimate items) and both Creditinfocenter.com and CreditBoards.com have excellent information you can use.

Prophet 1102
Review it.

Challenge and/or correct any incorrect information.

However, you can't remove facutual information. Only time will do that.

Pull your credit report first. Then go over it. See if there's anything on there that you can dispute. If not just work on paying one or two things off at a time.

Depending on what you need done...you can contact the credit bureaus and have certain items removed. Go to Bankrate.com or msn.com and search through the databases for more help.

Good luck!

THE premier website to answer your question is www.creditboards.com. Spend some time reading the high traffic forums and you'll learn a ton about credit and raising your score.

1) Get your free annual credit report from

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

2) review and contest any erroneous info like when a cellular company has given some ID crook a cell phone under your SSN and the bill has been run up to a bazillion dollars and never paid . . .

3) get any delinquent accounts current .

4) pay down debt to less than 25% of available credit . ( lowest possible % the best )

Good Luck

fyi : for repos , collections and judgements , you just have to wait 7 years for the info to fall off .

you can't get rid of things that actually happened even if you pay them off - if you let a credit card go to collections, or get a car repo'd, it will be on your credit history for 7 yrs - no way around it

Pay off your outstanding bills and they will drop off immediately unless it is a foreclosure then you have to wait 7 years..

Keep in mind the credit report records how timely you pay your bills.

So, getting creditors paid off and start paying your other bills like utility bills and rent/mortgage on time or early. This will do a lot to help your credit out.

Review your report to make sure you have no outstanding debts and to make sure everything on there is YOUR doing and not a mistake.

If you have a dispute then, dispute it.

Simply getting out of debt can also do a lot towards raising your credit score.

Remember the saying, people who understand intrest earn it...people who don't pay it.

You can order all 3 of your credit reports at the same time from any of the on line credit bureaus. Scan the reports over and then you can dispute any items on line as well, usually from the same place that you received the credit report from. They have 30 days to respond to you so save all your documentation. If they don't respond within 30 days they by law have to remove the item. You can also visit www.ftc.com to get even more self help. Also start by paying off the smaller items and working up. Your scores will go down briefly, but in the end they will go up faster. Hope that helps!

Start contacting the businesses on your report that have bad marks against you and dispute them or pay them off if you know you owe money. I've had 2 friends in the last year that significantly raised their credit scores by doing this (both were preparing to buy houses, and ended up doing so before the end of '07).

The credit report company you are viewing your report through, should have a process for disputing items on the report. You can take care of much of it right there online.

sponge
Don't pay off all your credit commitments in one go, but keep them paid on time, by keeping a few on the go is better than having none,it shows creditors that you can manage your finances, having no credit all will show nothing.. in time this will build up your rating..

Find out who you owe and pay them off one by one.

savingsguy
the only way to do this is to get a repair company do do it for you but be carefull because there is a lot of scam artists out there charging you per file my cousin started using this company 6 months ago and has just bought his first house and he had really bad credit before they charge a Flat fee and do all the work for you i believe its a 12 month program of credit restoration and credit information to help you keep your credit score as high as possible. good luck http://www.vrtechmarketinggroup.com/afigueira/

Dispute everything on your credit report!
That means with all 3 agencies. They have 30 days to verify these items or they have to be removed. Worst case scenario, it they do verify, you may at least have some of the late pays dropped...that will boost your credit score.

The best way to dispute is to send a certified letter to each debtor and use the pre-drafted letters from this website:

http://www.creditinfocenter.com/forms/

Always include the debt recovery # or acct number on the letter!

There is a thing such as the Fair Debt reporting Act...you should read up on this also and know your rights when you dispute!!!!!!!

You may have to send follow up letters to the debtor or credit bureau to have the items that are not validated dropped.

Good luck!!!

Anna is correct however there are other ways. You can go see a credit repair specialist. For a fee, they can attempt to fix your report by utilizing loopholes in the law to try and have them taken off. It is not easy, and there are no guarantees it will work, but absent of waiting 7-10 years, it is your best shot.

I would only use someone that is personally referred or has references.
