Shorty | Does anyone know what to do if a bill collector calls and harrasses on your job? |

Notify them by certified mail that they are not allowed to contact you at your job, or if you decide at your home also. Ubder the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act after they are notified if they call you, you may sue them $1,000 per each violation plus attorney fees. |

It depends on the type of debt you owe. If it is a federal student loan they can call your work unless your manager tells them you will be fired if they call again. If it's a credit card you can tell them not to call your job or you will be fired. |

Demand that they remove your work phone number from your account, and threaten to file a harassment charge if they call you again. If they do call after you make this request, you legally can file a harassment charge - you did warn them you would. |

It is NOT illegal for a collection agency to call your job, providing they do not know the employer doesn't permit such calls. They can call until they are notified in WRITING to cease calling the job, then after that should come the sheriff with the summons to court. |

Report them to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission)
go to this site, and see what your rights are:
http://www.ftc.gov
Also, you can send a letter, in writing, to the collector and order a "cease and desist all phone calls". They HAVE to abide by that. |

You should sent a debt validation letter and in that letter tell them that they are not to call you and that you prefer to communicate only via mail or fax.
Collection agencies violate debt collection laws and credit reporting laws all the time. This is why you want to get everything in writting.
Go to www.creditboards.com and look up debt validation. The service is free. |

Ask for them not to call you back at that number. However, if that is the only niumber that they have, adn you do not provide them with another, they will more than likely still call. Everybody pays taxes, sweetheart, even me, a lowly student. |

In California, it is illegal for bill collectors to harrass you on the job. Report the party. |

Call them back and politely ask the agency not to contact you again, provide an alternate more convenient time and number in which to reach you, then be sure to answer the phone when they call to tell them what your situation is and proactively come up with a solution to make payment arrangements. I am a bill collector myself and I will even cease calls temporarily to help people bide some time to review their finances but please do not hide or start screaming and yelling as this solves absolutely nothing and can make debt collectors more aggressive but would still never give them the right to call your work if have expressly asked them not do do so. It's better to work with an agent than to risk possible measures the original creditor can take such as a court summons or a sheriff at the door- these people aren't so nice. Good luck and don't give up! |
