This is the site set up by the government... You can access your credit report for free once per year. You will have to answer a bunch of questions to prove your identity... But they never request a CC #.
Don't go to freecreditreport.com This site is a pay site.

Your first poster is right, http://www.annualcreditreport.com gives you one free credit report a year for free from each of the three, including Experian. I know because I had to get mine last night and I don't have any way of paying for one so I found this site.

You should be much more worried about giving your ssn over the Internet. Look in the phone book for Credit bureau and go there you will have to give them the info but they use a secure system to check your records.
I get worried when an outfit spends money to" give" me something for free.

Try http://www.creditexpert.co.uk/ it's free trial and I have used it. Although they will not give u the credit rating (it's £5) but will give you full credit report.
