Does anyone know who to speak to about help with paying electric bills.?

electric company

Ellie.
Ring your electric company up .They will either work out a payment plan or give you a card meter where you can pay for your electricity as you go along. They will even arrange for you to pay any previous bills at a small amount each week.

Harley Lady
The electric company itself should be willing to work with you. But, if there is no money to make any payment, contact an agency like the Salvation Army. Look in the phone book. These organizations will help people in need especially if you have children. Most churches will help even if you are not a member. Good luck!

There is a number on your electricity bill to call if your having problems paying

jmc
In certain cases the electricity company will be willing to scrap your bill and sort out a different pay plan .. aslong as you show willing to pay in the future. Depends which company you are with.

Simple, go to the electric board, and they will let you pay a
smaller amount weekly

You might speak to someone at the Red Cross, Salvation Army, your local welfare office, a church. Many of these places have programs in place to give people a hand when they're in need.

Often, they won't pay the bill entirely but rather they'll pay just enough to keep the lights turned on until you can find a more viable solution to paying the bill yourself.

If you are having trouble, contact the provider of your power and speak with them, they can fit a pre-payment meter that will take a little off what you owe and you will pay for your power on a pay as you go basis.

You can contact your electric company to set up a "Budget Plan", or ask what other services they can provide.

If that's not enough and your income falls below certain guidelines (depends on which state you live in) you may qualify for assistance from your local Family Independance Agency.
Good luck!

Work out how much you can afford, then speak to your supplier and agree a payment plan.

First point of call would be to speak to the electricity supplier. If they are worth staying with, they should go in depth with you about how to reduce your bills through energy efficiency, offer you a better deal (for example, EDF Energy can register customers onto the Price Saver 2008 scheme even when you are already supplied by them and it automatically reduces the unit prices at no extra cost to you and no cancellation period), mention discounts such as when paying direct debit, becoming a Dual Fuel customer etc. and if you would like a prepayment meter installing plus the debt loaded they will be able to agree a weekly repayment rate too.

As for the bills themselves, make sure that all bills are based on accurate meter readings instead of estimates, and find out what your daily average of electrical consumption is, i.e. take meter readings yourself and work out how much is being used each day. 1 unit of electricity is equal to 1KW (or 1000w) of electricity. To give you an example, if you have a 2KW washing machine and it is used for an hour each day, then 2 units of your daily average comes just from that appliance.

Good luck!

If you are pretty far down the line of not paying, the electricity supplier may be limited in what they can offer you in terms of a Payment Plan. Your best option may be to have a Prepayment meter installed, the one with cards that u have to top up. This way, they can programme the meter with how much you owe and set it to take off an affordable amount each week. Call your supplier to make arrangements.
