Does co-signing on a loan hurt your credit score?
My husband was going to co-sign for a student loan but he's worried it will hurt his credit. Can someone justify his worries?

I don't know about his credit score, but DON'T DO IT!! The reason there is a co-signer needed is because the person is a bad risk. If the person doesn't pay the payments, guess who has to. YOU! The problem is that you can't control other people's behavior. I would urge you to say no. Never co-sign.

If the person ends up in a bind or cannot (or will not) pay for his loan, your husband will end up having to pay his loan for him/her.

This could hurt his credit.

The loan he co-signs for will count on his credit as if it were his own. Will lower available credit options due to his increased debit load; and if the co-maker is late or dumps on the loan, it's his credit.

It will, if that person miss any payments..

it depends if the money is being paid or not. If your the main signee and you dont pay it hurts but be careful then the creditors come looking for you too

If the person doesn't pay it will. If they make the payments on time, it will actually make his credit better. Co-signing for someone is scary and I personally wouldn't do it.

If he co-signs and you don't make the payments then it is up to him to make them. If he doesn't make them then yes it will hurt his credit.

he is correct. it will count against his credit, regardless of whether the buyer defaults, as it counts as an open account.

I know because my daughter had this happen with her ex-husband. she co-signed after they divorced so he could get a car and it was on her credit as an open account.

themeindzeye
It will if the other person doesn't pay up.

I'm not going to be of any help in the "justifying" problem. I would just pray that at any time in your life you two don't get divorced. I know that sounds negative, but things happen and people change...especially the people you think you know best. I co-signed on alot of things when my husband and I were married and now that we got divorced and he filed bankruptcy, it's all fell onto my credit. Thanks to him I now have bad credit! Just always read the fine print on EVERYTHING!

It will hurt if the person he is co-signing for is not going to pay. I wouldn't do it unless they were family and even then I wouldn't do it. Have you look out for yourself these days. What is he co-signing on?
