Does having a very high limit on a credit card hurt your FICO score, if you pay off the balance every month?

No! Amex has no limit and I never heard of that hurting your score ... now if you have a lot revolving accounts that could have a negative effect...kr

Good Luck!

Depends on how much other available credit you have. If you have several cards with available credit then you almost become a higher risk because at any time you could charge them all up and then refuse to pay. If it is the case that you have many (4 or more) cards with high amounts available and low balances then you may want to close enough to get yourself down to 3. Never close the oldest card. It shows credit history and a long credit history is very good for your score even if you never use the card.

Just me........
no, as long as you pay the balance every month...

dustystar
NO, as long as the used amount is 25% or less. In fact it would help your credit to have a higher limit and only have a small part used.

If the limit is way higher then you would ever use, have the card company reduce it. The limit is there and could be used at any given time . Fico looks at it that way.

beauty s
No, that makes your score go up

Are you referring to the limit or the balance. Usually a high limit is good and has a positive effect on your credit score, because it shows a low balance to limit. However, to carry a balance which is near your limit is not good. It seems that the intent is for you to have access to ample credit but not to use it. GOOD QUESTION

Having a high limit HELPS your score.

And you dont even need to pay the entire balance to have a good score. You just dont want to keep the cards to close to their limits. Alot of experts say keeping a small balance on the card will help your credit score more then having no balance.

Nope, actually it can help your credit score. They like to see that you have available credit and it isn't all used. It will raise your score.

I have one card at a $28K limit and never charge more than a few $100 per month. After having the card a few months, my credit score increased.
