I have a year left to go in college. Everyone recommends getting a credit card and using it lightly to build up my credit score.

A good rule of thumb is... If they didnt run her credit FOR the loan, then by defaulting it CANNOT hurt her credit.
If they did for example, that means they co-signed or it was a joint app. then of course it CAN hurt their credit if you default. |

As long as she wasnt the joint owner, then no it doesnt affect her. My sister in law had the same problem, it didnt affect her but it did hurt her husbands credit and his ex's because both names were on the loan. |

I don't think so, if her name was not involved, but she could check her credit report to make sure. It also depends on how badly you defaulted whether they reported it. If you were just late, it probably wasn't even reported. |

It would not hurt her credit if her name was not on the loan. However, if the two of you applied for another loan or credit card in the future there's a chance you won't get approved because of your credit. If she has a good credit history then she should be ok as long as you're name is not on something she gets. |

As long as that loan does not appear on her credit file, then no it does not hurt her. If it was in just your name, then it shouldn't appear in her credit file, but then again credit files are not known to be the most accurate of things. Have her visit www.annualcreditreport.com. If she has not ordered her credit reports from the three major credit reporting agencies within the past year, she will be able to order them free of charge from this website. Have her review all three of her credit files and dispute any incorrect information. |
