Leah | Does marriage effect good credit? |
I have great credit, my boyfriend on the other hand has very bad credit. We have been talking marriage for quite some time now and always just thought that with the current situation we would use my good credit in the future to get a home etc. Now it has been brought to my attention that if we get marriage his bad credit will effect mine negatively. Is this true? Thank you. |

The only way he will affect your credit is if you have joint accounts.
I've seen many spouses buy houses alone because one has bad credit and one has good credit. |

No...not marriage itself. If you have a joint account and he screws up it will screw you up. It may be hard to get a house though. But it really doesn't take that long to straighten out bad credit. Go to Equifax.com to get started Don't use on of those credit repair services. You can do anything they can and it wont cost you. Equifax is the credit agency we use, and I have helped many to get their credit on track. |

No, it is so not true. Your credit is completely separate from his and it stays that way after marriage. Just help him work on his, I got my husbands credit score raised over 130 point in a little over a year, all I did was got him some credit cards and paid them in full on time every month and it really raised his score fast. |

His credit score will not effect yours as long as your finances are separate. Once you start getting joint credit than if one of you abuses it it will affect the other. Just like if you help him bring his up by teaching him good credit sense. |

My credit was 680s when i got married and my wife only just got her social security card about a month before we got married. I put her on two of my best credit cards and now her credit score is near 800. Thats higher than any credit score i have ever had! My negatives didnt go on her credit, but most of my negatives are paid anyway, so i'm probably not much help to you. |

Who brought this to your attention? What is their source for this information? I wonder.
Unless you have joint accounts your score will not merge. Do not get joint accouonts. Manage your own finances.
You can help him out by making him an authorized user on one or two of your credit cards but keeping the cards on your person. When you pay a bill he will get improved credit score without even having access to the card!
You could also consider co-signing for him to get a credit card but the risk is higher because you are liable for the debt if he defaults. Not a good choice.
With the authorized user approach, he is not charging anything just getting credit for having done so based on your authorization everytime you buy something and make a payment. |

It can negatively impact your credit...for example, when purchasing a home it could raise interest rates, the amount you qualify for, etc. The best way to avoid this situation is make him improve his credit...start paying off whatever you can, even if it is only $10/month...also, a lot of debt you can settle for a fraction of the original amount if you pay in a lump sum! |
