Does my address go against my credit score?
If a previous occupant has a poor credit history, will this affect my credit score?
Additional Details
If a previous occupant has a poor credit history, will this affect my credit score?

I live in the UK.

Not in the United States, but I have seen several posters here say that if you live in the U.K. this does happen.

I can't see how. Your credit is tied to your SS#, not your address.

Yes and no. Banks can judge you blindly by your postcode. You'll get a lower credit limit if you apply for a credit card compare to staying in a 'posh' postcode area.

Your credit score is personal. Don't think you're previous occupant's credit history to have any bearing on yours.

the only way an address can affect your credit rating is if you happen to share the same surname as someone else who lived there, or lives there, and they have a crap record. Problem if you name is smith, not so much if your name is acegikmoqsuwy.

if it is the surname thing you can get a note put on your credit files (with equifax & experian) distancing yourself from that individual. You can even do this if they are a relative living at the same address.

Other than that some problems are caused when you dont show on the electoral register (remember when you ticked that "do no include me on the sold copy of the register" - ooppss not such a good idea after all). So you cannot prove you actually live at the address. Most banks etc, knowing that this happens a lot, and have other procedures to let you prove where you live. (other bank accounts, utility bills that sort of thing).

Catalogue companies are usually over cautious of the address thing, so that may be a problem. Lots of previous addresses tend to make them jittery as well.

and then finally to screw with your credit history there is the "no credit history" thing. if you havent had credit in the last 6 years then you have a blank record. From a blank record no-one can see if your credit repayments are usually on time and so will not "take a risk" on you. Always worth having a credit card which you spend little on (petrol or food shopping) every monyth, and then pay off in full. No interest and lots of "000000" (meaning 0 repayments overdue) on your credit report showing you are a good risk.

No. Unless you're the one that gets evicted, a previous tenant's bad history cannot affect yours.

UK, no it goes by your name and National Insurance number. If you moved address it wouldn't make any difference, or change you name, it the NI number.

credit scoring is based on your name & date of birth. doesn't matter who has lived at the address previously....

PInky without perky!!
yes it does! anyone who has had bad credit at that address will automatically affect you! you can check out your credit report at websites many for free but to have it altered would cost you!

'Fraid so, just like anyone you were connected with financially in the past - family, ex's, landlords etc.

Get in touch with credit records lot & see if you can get it corrected. They were really helpfull to me & my other half on seperate occasions.
