Gamergrl | Does paying old debt help my FICO score? |
I have some old hospital bills from 2002 and 2004. If I go ahead and pay the debt collectors will this increase my score? Also, if i do pay off the debt, does the debt still show on my credit report?
Thanks!

If you have old hospital bills that are in collections, and they're still trying to contact you, then yes, you can pay off the bills, or at least work with them to set an arrangement up. If it's been a few years and no one's contacted you, but you know you have the bills, it's already affected your credit. Your right to credit, what you can do, is pull your credit report. You are able to do this once a year, from a choice of one of the three credit bureaus. Experian, Trans union, or Equifax. Pull your credit (which chances are will be recent from a couple mths ago) because it does take a while for everything you do to update. And see what you do have on there that negatively impacts your credit, and see what you can do from there. All you have to do is sign up, and you should have it in minutes.

Remember - FICO scores is not the ONLY thing creditors look at when approving you, depending on what you're trying to obtain. They look at what KIND of credit you've had (cards, revolving like car payments with a bank, how long you've had history, etc.) to determine how you stand. |

You can request that , after you pay them that they report it to the credit agency as "paid in full" or something similar.
Get this in writing from them before you pay it.
Once they show paid, your score will eventually come up. |

Yes you should pay old bills, It will increase your credit score initially and you will slowly watch your FICO rise as time passes. The debt will show on your credit score for seven years but it shows as paid which is obviously better than open. The only thing that truly heals credit is time. So keep your credit spotless and in a few years it will repair itself. |

If you pay them make sure you have an aggrement in advance for them to send a notice to the credit bureaus that the debt has been satisfied. Sometimes I have seen a score go down because an old debt now becomes a current debt issue. Hospital bills from 2002 and 2004 should not be majorly affecting your score. High current debt to available credit slow pays and other debt issues within the last year have the greatest impacts. Although it is always a good thing to pay one's debts the crazy credit system sometimes penalizes you for paying your bills. |
