Does running a credit report lower your credit score?

It depends.

If you are using one of the sites where you pull your own credit, then no. That's a soft pull and doe's not count against you.

If however you work someplace that has access to credit reports like I do and you pull your credit through them then yes. That's a hard pull and counts 3-5 points.

The only exception to this is when you are shopping for a home or vehicle, then all inquiries made in a 14-day period are lumped together and only count as one.

They all show, but your credit only takes one hit.

when you get it yourself it doesn't. when it is pulled several times for a mortgage or a car loan with 2 weeks, its treated as one. multiple inquiries will affect your score, but inquiries are only about 10% of you score. every inquiry doesn't matter but the bureaus look at the total number of inquiries over a set period of time, usually six months

Nopes. You can run your credit report as many times as you want - it wont lower your score - as long as it is you who is asking for the report. For eg, there are lot of companies that you can create your account with and subscribe to their services for a monthly charge, you can view and update your credit report (as many times as you want) using their service, that wouldnot lower your score. Your score will decrease only and only if it's somebody else (like a credit card company or a bank or any type of creditor) that asks for your credit report because this way the credit bearaus believe that you are looking for credit, thus your financial situation is not good (which personally I think is not right).

Brain
Not when you run it, but yes if others run it. 10% of your score is based on inquiries. So, it is an accumulation of inquiries that hurts it. Good luck

I don't think it actually lowers your score, but it does show on your report, so I wouldn't check but once or twice a year. Most lenders see many hits on your report and they become concerned that you're seeking a lot of credit/debit.

Running one credit report doesn't lower your credit score, but having your credit report run more than once in a short time period can -- that's a signal to the credit companies that you're looking to make a major purchase or that you're looking to open another line of credit somewhere.

not if you pull it

I've heard you can check it once per year without it affecting your credit score. If you do it more than that then yes, it can lower it.
