Does settlling on debt with collection companies make your credit report worse?

No. It will show that you paid and satisified your debt. If you can get a settlement amount, take it! Also, keep in mind that your creditors aren't the only ones who can offer or talk settlement. If you are strapped for cash like most of us, most collectors will be glad to talk settlement. You just ask them if they would consider a settlement amount and see what they say. Hey, it never hurts to ask! Good Luck!

It is preferable to the alternative.

Not at all this is good because it shows that you are trying to pay your debts I was a debt collector that's how I know

jamescuckow
no it makes it better! it can take up to 30 days to show on you credit report though!

quackaddictswife
No!! It shows that you paid it! I should know. But they really start offering these :settlements" when it is about to clear off your credit report anyways..

IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF YOU SETTLE IT THEN IT GETS LISTED AS "SETTLED IN FULL" INSTEAD OF "PAID IN FULL"

THE TRUTH IS THAT ONCE IT IS AT A COLLECTION AGENCY THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE ALREADY. THERE IS THIS ONE GUY GOING AROUND HERE QUOTING THE FAIR CREDIT REPORTING ACT BUT HIS INFO IS SOMEWHAT FLAWED, I CANT REMEMBER HIS NAME BUT HIS AVATAR KIND F LOOKS LIKE THE DEVIL. HE HAS SOME GOOD SITES TO VISIT BUT HE IS VAGUE ON HIS ADVICE AND IT SEEMS THAT HE TRIES TO GET PEOPLE INTO MORE TROUBLE WITH COLLECTION AGENCIES THEN TRY TO HELP THEM.

THE ONLY WAY A COLLECTION AGENCY CAN REMOVE AN ACCOUNT IS IF THEY HAVE THE ORIGINAL CREDITOR PERMISSION.

BEFORE YOU PAY THE DEBT TRY TO MAKE A DEAL WITH THEM TO REMOVE IT OR AT LEAST LIST IT AS "PAID IN FULL"

IT's better to settle the debt than keep it outstanding. If you have already been sent to collections chances are your credit score is already pretty bad.. Credit is a very important thing to maintain. I found consulting someone about my credit score.. how I could improve it helped me alot. Be careful, your credit score will haunt you for years and prevent you from making alot of good decisions..

If you settle with any debt it will show up as a negative on your credit report. However it will look a bit better than not paying at all. But still your credit will be affected.

As a former banker, lender to be exact, YES, YES, YES. "Settle" means that the credit cards balances are CHARGED-OFF (that's what these "counseling" places don't tell you) and you continue to pay a small amount towards the debt. To a banker (off of the record-they would NEVER tell you this), the next step for you would be a bankruptcy because they feel that you obviously cannot handle your finances. If you had a loan at a bank and that loan "went bad"...and the senior lender saw that the lender did you the loan when you had credit counseling at the time, there is a good chance that lender would be fired. It's that serious.

Eventually it will make it better, but it will lower your credit score at first, until everything is paid, and paid on time!
