It is wishfully thinking to say that if you stop paying your credit card everything will be fine, Call your credit card company and explain your situation, they will work with you without negatively affecting your credit. They useally don't report late payments unless they are thirty days late or more anyhow, but it is always best to be honest with them, They really are not the bad guys, they don't send goons after you to collect, but they do want to know why they are not recieving payments anymore.... some companies even offer programs that can "forgive" the balance on your card or defer payments for things like job loss and medical issues. My best advice is to call them! they will hep you more if you keep in contact then if you just disappear... Besides if you have good credit it only takes one late payment to take it all away, and if you have bad credit one more collection can push you over the edge to where you are not financable anymore. Your credit is your life blood, never ever take it for granted, it effects so much more than just your ability to get loans.... Some companies are pushing for credit checks for employment, Insurance agents are now using it to set your rates, it can prevent you from renting a place to live, and so much more!

in Aus they will get a debt collector and if they do that they report you, and your name gets blacklisted for 5 years and you are unable to get credit of any sort ie loans, another credit card, purchase a mobile phone etc.

That is the worst thing you can do. Not paying the credit card bill will hurt your credit making it harder to get loans. You should stop using the card try and pay the minimum payment if not more, if you pay more then you will effectively pay less in the long run due to interest. When you pay off your card, do not use it for small purchases. A credit card should only be used for luxury products like electronics, and when you make a purchase with your credit card pay that purchase off as fast as possible before making another one. Never ever max out a card or make so many purchases so that you are not able to make the minimum payments.

pixie_proof
the first thing you should do is contact the credit department of the credit card company and discuss payments. the can hold interest for a period (obviously the card cannot be used in this period) but this does help considerably.

secondly you can contact ITSA (http://www.itsa.gov.au/) and they will help you with you finances and arrange a payment plan with all your debts consolidated. you will not have any credit card until all debts are paid but it does make it easier to have only one payment per month.

the third option is insolvency or bankruptcy.

do not ignore your responsibility; act before things are due and you will get a much better reception towards getting help.

this applies with other invoices also; contact the company prior to the due date and you will get assistance with your financial problem; if you leave contact until after your Final Notice they wont be so helpful.

Don't listen to that advice. Credit card company has all of your personal information even when you're dead. They still collect money from your estate.

If you don't pay your bills, so many things can happen
1- They will write the account off and send it to a collection agency.
2- You will get bad credit
3- Your interest will continue to accrue not to mention late fees
4- You won't be able to get a loan or credit cards with decent APRs because your account was written off. No one will loan you money because they consider you're at risk.
5- You still have to pay for it eventually with more money than you started with.
6- They will find you no matter where you go. They have a team of people to do "skip trace" to find you. They will harass you until they get their money.
7- When it's on your credit report, you will have a long time to clean it up.
8- They will have judgment against you, in the past, they garnish your wages. I don't know they still do it now or not. No, they won't repossess your stuff because it's not worth for anything if they take back the sweater you bought with your credit card.
9- You may not be able to get the job you want if they check your credit. Not all companies do but if you work in finance or anything relates with money, they may check your credit report.
10- You may not be able to rent an apartment or simply getting your electricity to hook up. They all check your credit report.

1st they send you warnings, maybe 2 or 3. 2nd they cancel your card and turn you over to a collection agency. 3rd they spank your personal credit report for up to 7 years. You can still get credit from someone , but usually at a real high intrest rate. You will be labeled High Risk. I think that with the new laws that credit card companies have working for them now, they could possibly try to put a lean on something you own.

well ur risking ruining ur credit, this is very important. If you have bad credit and want to purchase anything, the interest rates will be higher for you...or they wont even sell u the item. Just try to pay it little by little. good luck.

umm...i guess!

Just because you move from the house your bills were coming to does not mean your credit card company won't find you. They can find you by your social security number, which is what you provide to get the card in the first place. Its not easy for you to drop out of the face of the earth. Did you know when you go out to apply for a job some employers are starting to check your credit score? Also when you want to rent an apartment they'll check your credit and they'll see that you haven't payed your bills. Once you establish bad credit its usually very hard to get fair credit, if you ever apply for a car loan, house loan, credit card you'll likely be turned down, and if you are accepted which is very unlikely you'll get a very high, and i mean HIGH interest rate. Why don't you try making minimum payments instead until your situation gets better? I'm not sure how old you are or how old that "friend" of yours is but do NOT listen to him/her!!!

sobrien
yeah..no that's not a good idea. you still have a social security # which will tie you into any thing you want to do financially. so cut costs everywhere else and make the minimum payment on the card, this way you don't get your car, house, and other belongings repossessed.

Moving won't help. They'll find you as soon as you set up an account with the phone company or the cable company.

If you don't pay the card, they will go looking for you and once they find you the phone calls at home and at work will start. After a couple of months, they will assign the account to a collection agency who will turn up the pressure. Finally they will start a court action. Once they have a judgement, they will try to garnishee your wages.

This all doesn't happen right away, it usually takes a year or so for the process to take place.

If you don't pay, your accounts get turned over to collection agencies who will literally hound you to death with phone calls and letters. If you do not respond they will sue you in court and get a judgement against you. They will get a judgement to have your wages garnished or get a lien put on any property you may own. What do you think? They are just going to say ok, you don't have to pay your bills?
