Does your credit score go down everytime somebody checks it?
Ive heard that and I was wondering how many times does it take for your credit score to decrease? Im trying to buy a car and two dealerships have checked it so far but i want to try one more car dealership! Also how much is taken off from your credit score when people check it?

Let me CORRECT Heidi and Trigger above, and elaborate a little on the response Nurse said...

When your credit is pulled by a lender to extend a line of credit, they perform a "hard pull" (regular inquiry) which shows them your complete credit report, and in most cases, your credit score. An inquiry entry is placed on your credit file, from the bureau(s) they pull from.

Your score can be affected by these hard pulls, but by a very marginal amount. There is NO set amount of points that it goes down, so all that 4 points nonsense that the clueless individual above stated, is crap.

When you're shopping for an auto loan, and a home loan in particular, you are granted a grace period of time to apply for multiple lines of credit/offers from various lenders, and only getting docked for (1) hard pull....against your overall score. However, it will still show each inquiry on your credit report. This reason alone, allows you to 'shop around' for the best deal.

For an auto loan, you have a 14-day period from the time of your first inquiry from a financial lender, to apply for as many auto loans as you would like, and it have an overall combined effect of (1) pull towards your score.

For a home mortgage, you have a 30-day period from the time of your first inquiry from a financial lender, to apply for as many home loans as you would like, and it have an overall combined effect of (1) pull towards your score.

The inquiries will show up on your report, and (possibly) lower your score regardless of if you're extended a line of credit or not.

So if it's been less than 14 days since your first credit pull from the dealership, feel secure in knowing that you can still shop around for an auto loan to get the best rate....because your score has (possibly) been marginally affected by the first credit pull, and you can continue to have your credit pulled for an auto loan up to that 14-day mark, and have it all only count against your score from the first pull.

Let me reiterate, there is NO set amount of points that any single hard pull takes. It is all part of a very large and conditional formula to each credit reporting bureau. What they are likely pulling, is your FICO score, which bases it's number off your Equifax credit report. You can ask the dealership what your score is, since they know it once they run your credit.

Hello there!

You problem will fall as credit inquiries. Not all inquiries would affect your FICO score:

* Inquiries that count toward your FICO score.
There is only one type of credit inquiry that counts toward your FICO score. When you apply for a mortgage, auto loan or other credit, you authorize the lender to request a copy of your credit report. These types of inquiries, prompted by your own actions, appear on your credit report and are included in your FICO score.

* Inquiries that don’t count toward your FICO score.
Your own credit report requests, credit checks made by businesses to offer you goods or services, or inquiries made by businesses with whom you already have a credit account do not count toward your FICO score. Credit checks by prospective employers also do not count. These types of inquiries may appear on your credit report, but they are not included in your FICO score.

Your FICO score is not affected when you check your credit.
Checking your credit reports regularly to be sure they are accurate and error-free is a good idea. In fact, maintaining accurate credit reports is a part of good credit management, which can help to improve your FICO scores over time.

I hope it help yah!..Good Luck!

Use this service - http://creditreport.fateback.com - instead of checking score by yourself.
I use it to monitor my credit score during last 3 years. And it does not make anything with my credit score.

When you go to by a car you have a window of time from the first check to the last, it is allowable in certain situations like that or buying a house. I am not sure what the time frame is but if they pull it close together it is like one hit instead of two or three. A few points is deducted for each ping to your credit, but I think you should be fine if you stay within the window.

Payment history - 35%;
Amounts owed - 30%;
Length of credit history - 15%
= 80%

Credit pulls don't count much. This allows you to shop for the best deal. Also keep in mind that each time your credit is pulled, your information is being sold.

Your credit score goes down by 4 points everytime someone checks your credit. this is to deter you from seeking multiple avenues of credit.
