Establishing and keeping good/great credit?
Hi! I'm 21 and new at this whole thing. I admit I don't understand much about credit and stuff but I am learning. My parents had/have pretty bad credit. The problem for them was a bunch of credit cards. My older brother is 25 and also dug himself a pretty big hole with a credit card or 2.
My situation is..I need a car. I'm looking to buy a used one but I can't get a loan without credit..and bc of my parents and brother's credit..I have no one to cosign.
So my question is, how do you get good credit and KEEP it. There has to be a trick to this. Also my parents and older brother never were "budget" people. I really want to do better and be able to get the things I need and have great credit...how do I do that?

Get a credit card and pay it in full every month. Don't use above 20% of your available credit at any given time. You'll want to establish your credit for about 6-12 months in order to show a payment history.

There is no "trick". Get one credit card, us it, and pay the bill on time. That's all there is to establishing good credit.

You see from their mess what not to do.

Here's a tip: Pay for everything with cash.
Including your car.

Another tip: start budgeting. One reason they have a mess is because they never learned.

If you need help, read "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey.
In it, he talks about how to do a budget, how credit cards are ruining people, and a plan to stay out of debt for the rest of your life.

There's no trick to getting and keeping good credit. Pay what you owe every month. Keep a written budget of what you have to pay for each month, be realistic about what it costs you to live, and don't spend more than you earn.

To raise credit score

1. Always pay on time or ahead of time.
2. maintain low balances on credit cards
3.To boost your score: Don't charge anything for at least 60 days before applying for a loan
4. keep your total potential debt to earnings load low - If you have a card with a $15000 credit line, you may ask them to reduce it to something more realistic, like $5000.
5. You should have a recent history of both installment or term (Car or house loans) and revolving credit.
6.To boost your score: Don't close unused accounts when you transfer debt.
7.To boost your score: Consider opening another credit-card account or two, or taking out a car loan or small bank loan.

Hey, I am 22 yrs old and have worked at a bank since I was 18...I got my first "charge" card (different than a credit card-has no VISA or Mastercard logo) at 18 from Express (clothing store). I was pre approved for $500...I kept a great payment history and always paid more than the minimum.

I also had a checking account with my bank since I was 17 and when I got their college credit card, they approved me for $1000 six months after I started using my Express card. (fyi-you do not need to be in college to get a "college" credit card. They just all it that to attract younger people...these cards normally has a higher interest rate. But, unfortunately, young people just starting out building credit normally have to start with a higher interest rate)

To build a good credit history, all you have to do is make payments on time and consistently. Paying off your card right away will not make your credit look better because it doesn't show a history you have built with your creditors. That's all there is to it.

Now, if you are looking to get a car ASAP...you may want to look into finding someone to co-sign a loan for you...I know you said your parents and brother don't have good credit...maybe someone else in your family? Or an older friend? Hope this helps and good luck whatever you do!! :)

you seems to be a very realistic and smart person.to live a happy life without debt, just save the money in your checking acct, and only then use the credit card,so when the bill comes, pay in full.that way you will build your credit by paying off every thing on time.just to have a good credit history you must use your credit card but always pay it back in full.never ever buy any thing from a credit card if you do not have the full amout to pay off,as you receive the credit card statement.
never ever spend any money for any thing to buy by credit card if you can't afford to pay back in full.if you want to buy a car specially used one then you must save the money first then buy, because if you buy the used car,it will need to fix it because it is used and old, if you loan the money for car then you must have car payments and car insurance and gas to run the car,and if it breaks down then how you will bring the money to fix?fixing the car is quite expensive.so my suggestion to you is try to find some one in your family who has no debt and good credit to co-sign for you for a brand new car, with at least 1/4 price of a new american 4 cylender car down payments and the rest for 5 years loan, but try to pay extra on the monthly payments to finish payments in three years,so you can save quite a bit interest money.and brand new will last you hassel free for at least 7 to10 years,by that time your credit will become excelent and then sell the good condition car, to buy an other brand new car.old car seems cheep but it will cost you every day problem and money just fixing one by one every time when it breaks down.i co-sign for my daughter in her first car when she was studyind medicen and she was a part time tutor living with me and hardly earning about $900 a month.she budget her expenses and we bought chevy cavalier two doors 1993 model, which was at that time i think for $12,500/-we paid $1500 for all the paper work and down and almost $10,000/- bank loan, which she paid off in three years and she used the car for seven year and gifted me which i still driving and have not any big problem, but now i got an other car pontiac sunfire which is 1997 model,i think i will sell the 93 car.though i want to kep both of them, but for extra payments of car insurance i have to sell the old.i still think my 93 car can run for few more years if some one who knows about the cars so he can do himself if it breaks down.
good luck.

Orchard Bank is fair to those who have never had credit before; fees are lower than comparable products. If you're worried that you will get yourself into trouble like your family did, you're being realistic. Life happens and if you're not careful you could get into trouble. Even if you don't spend money carelessly an emergency like medical bills could cause debt. You seem to be aware of what could happen. Here's a tip to help your credit and keep your debt low. You should use no more than 40% of your credit limit. This will give you an overall better credit score. Plus when creditors look at your report they like to see that you are not the type to constantly max credit out. http://www.creditfast.com

ALWAYS know what's going re: your credit history and score. The government has made available to the public one free credit report per year (via www.annualcreditreport.com). Check it every year, especially with an eye for purchases and loans that you don't remember taking out - ID theft is the quickest way a person's credit can be ruined.
Also, one credit card at a time!!!
