Fiancée's Parents Taking advantage of and ruining her credit?
My fiancée's parents have used her credit for the past couple of years for cable, internet, and other utilities. She spoke to her mom about it and her mom supposedly canceled the dish account. That was several years ago.

When she went to visit them over Christmas, she found out that her mom has used her credit once again to open up another account to get TV service. She said something to her dad but her dad ignorantly said "It will only help your credit!" That made me furious!

Her parents have already let 2 hospital bills of her's go to collections and is now harming her credit. They claim to be paying it, but we haven't seen a difference.

I want her to talk with them and have the TV service canceled since it is in her name, but she is scared to say anything to her parents. We're getting married in 6 months and she's worried that they will not pay for any part of it (personally, I would be shocked if they put 2 cents toward it!)

What needs to be or can be done? I'm assuming that there isn't anything that I can do since this is between her and her parents even though it will affect me in 6 months!

First and foremost her parents have committed a crime if your fiance did not approve of them opening up these accounts in her name. So technically they could be arrested for Identity Theft. Now, this is a parent thing so that gets a bit "sticky".

Utilities such as Cable DO NOT help her credit, in fact they can only harm it if the bills are not paid. So she has a few choices. To "drop the hammer" on her parents and have them arrested for Identity Theft. To continue the way it is and just make sure that the bills do get paid. Or to close out the account(s) and pay them off to make sure it does not harm her credit anymore.

She also needs to put a Fraud Alert on her credit report. This will keep any new accounts being opened up in her name without her direct approval, that is as long as the company attempts to check her credit.

If there are any payments she didn't authorize them to make - she has to report it to the credit card company as fraud.

IF she's letting them use it - THEN SHE IS RESPONSIBLE. She's an adult, and adults have every right to let themselves get screwed.

I don't mean to be rude in any way....that's just the reality of the situation.

First thing you need to do is put a credit freeze on her credit reports at Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. They all have info on their websites on how to do that. That will prevent them from ever doing that again. Then close any credit cards owned jointly with her parents. Call the utility/cable companies to change the name over to her parents or cancel the service. If the service is in her name then she can cancel it. They can restart it then in their own name. That's the 3 things the I would start out doing.

This will affect you. Once you get married and want to do things like buy a car or a down payment on a house or renting an apartment. Her credit score matters. Tell her to call up the cable people...and whoever else and cancel everything. Furthermore, I would have her credit monitor so she can know when people use her SSN to get new things. Warn the parents that if this keeps happening, you WILL report fraud on their behalf.

Since it's in her name she should be able to cancel the service herself. No body needs cable.

Call off the marriage unless you want to be responsible for her parents' bills for the rest of their lives. This girl is allowing them to use her credit over and over, and she doesn't seem to have the nerve to stop them. If she won't take control now, she probably never will and it will certainly be your problem too.

cherylangelclb
if she is really worried about it you guys should team up and let her parents know that it needs to stop (use sound reasons like you would want to buy a house soon after the wedding or something that requires good credit). if that doesn't work you might need to play dirty by reporting it to the police as identity theft or tell them you will if they don't stop. be firm when asking them to pay up the account and stop using her credit. don't settle. hope this helps

I went through the same situation with my husbands mother. We ended up having to take her to court, it's the only way to get all the bad debt out of your fiance's name!

If it is on your fiances credit that means the TV service account is under her name with her social security number. Have your fiance call the TV company and cancel the account. I would be more than willing to help out my parents like that but if they let something go to collections that would be the end of it. Since you are marrying her, if she doesn't say anything you should. It doesn't have to be mean or disrespectful either. Tell them that until they can prove to you that they can and will pay their bills so that it does not adversely affect YOUR credit, you are not going to help them out.

You are right to be concerned. First, I would assume your fiancée is above age and therefore should be in control of her own finances and credit responsibility. I understand she may not want to upset them, but sometimes without communication nobody will get anywhere. I would recommend that she cancel the credit card in it's entirety or even better, maintain the card but change the account number. It seems like her parents have her credit card information saved or logged somewhere, so the only way to stop this without confrontation is for her to call the company issuing her the credit and ask for an account number change (she may even add she feels like her account number has been compromised). They should be more than happy to help her change it and therefore the next time her parents will try to add another expense to the bill, it will be denied.

Tell your fiancée to store her credit acct. number in a secure location and not give it to her parents. If she still lives with them, she may want to cancel her statements and do paperless bill payments through the internet so they don't get a hold of her mail and steal her credit information. If she is the sole owner of her credit cards, this can be considered fraud regardless of relationship with the person committing the fraud so it should be taken very seriously. But all in all, since it is her parents, she should be able to come to an agreement with them about the bills they owe. Hope that helps!

You're not only marrying the woman, you're also marrying her credit rating. Don't get married until this is settled or it will settle on you.
