tnguyen987 | First time credit card? |
I just recently got a credit card and I'm wondering if having the 24% apr that I do have is because this is my first credit card (I'm a student with no credit).
Anyway, I know this is a ridiculously high apr, but will I still be able to build credit as long as I pay off the bill each month?
Last question, someone told me that one way to build credit faster is to pay the minimum for one month, and then pay the rest the next month. Is that true? |

While availing a credit card, it is necessary to check the credit card rate. This rate plays an inevitable part, as based on this rate your payment amount is decided. Various credit cards are available with different rate. Every time, consumers try to choose a credit card at a lower interest rare.
Most of the time, it is seen that while choosing a credit card, people generally check whether the rate is low or not. But a low rate cannot be the only consideration in availing a credit card. Besides rate, a consumer should heed in other factors as well. Remember, though various credit card companies entice consumers with low interest rates; at the same time, they include various hidden costs and charges with a credit card as well. So, do not only verify the interest rate, but also consider other things while availing a credit card.
Many a time, credit card companies offer low rate for a specific period of time. Such low rates are considered as an introductory offer of various companies. In such cases, check how long the offer will last. After the period is over, verify what the interest rate will be, whether it will be affordable for you or not etc.
In case of rare use, a consumer should try to get the card where no annual or monthly fee is charged. In such cases, if the interest rate is a bit high, still the option will be beneficial. My first credit card was a secured card which means you pay the bank how much credit you want. It is used as a deposit and so if you dont pay it they take it. So if you want a 500 credit line you give them 500 and so on. After 6 months or maybe I think its 18 months you pay off on time and so you get the money back and they can raise your line and make it non secure. That was the way I went for my first one. Some companies give you an introductory low apr on the card for 9 months. You dont pay interest on credit cards if you pay the balance off monthly though. Either if you have 0% to whatever interest rate you have. You should though make sure you are not late with payments and not roll over purchases over months. |

24 % APR - That's banking ... don't use it and pay cash.

Yes that is an absurdly high APR, but my APR on my first card was pretty high as well and it was because I had no credit history at all. Your best bet is to pay off the card as it comes in. This way you can avoid those high finance charges that just add to your balance each month and cause you to pay a higher minimum payment. Just paying the minimum barely touches the interest on the card which is the killer. You can either pay it off if you like, or pay over the minimum by at least $10 and that way you'll be kicking the interest in the butt. Most card companies want you to only pay the minimum because they make more money that way by charging you the interest. So if I were you, either pay over the minimum, or pay off the card so they can't hit you hard with the interest. |

Yes, you will build credit even if you pay in full every month.
It would be silly to pay the minimum every other month any incur all that interest.
If you're curious about all the nitty gritty details of how your FICO credit score is calculated, check out the June 30th article at http://www.uthunk.com/ .
As you can see, leaving a balance on your card will actually lower your FICO score because the % of your available credit that you're utilizing will be higher (which lowers your FICO score). |

If the company to whose credit card you have applied, charges you a very high interest rate, avoid it. When you apply for secured credit cards, you'll find some companies will charge you an annual fee. It is ok in certain cases. An annual fee not exceeding $60 is acceptable. But don’t pay over $60 in annual fees for a secured credit card. |

yes, most likely that high apr is for that reason, but as long as you are paying off the balance each month, you are not paying interest. once you have had the card at least six months, and demonstrated you make your payments on time, you should call them and ask for a lower rate. tell them another company offered lower apr.
not sure about the minimum one month, and paying off the next, but it sounds good. creditors look at not only are you making payments, but what balances you owe, in comparison to available credit.
if you manage it well, it wont take long to build your credit.
good luck |
