Get a credit report and see what's stated on there. It's good you want to take charge of your credit. I did the same exact thing and I wanted to share my experiences with others and I have a blog about it. Check it out and tell me what you think. But again, first things first, get a credit report and you're entitled to a free one every year. Have you ever had it pulled before?

You could order a copy of your credit report. You can do that online, but of course you need to use a credit card...figure that one out. That will tell you all your creditors, how much you owe, and how bad the rating is against each one. That's the easiest way, or you could call everyone you owe and just ask them how much you owe.

The credit bureaus are a good way to start. They don't always show the same credit rating as each seems to have slightly different criteria for judging credit. If you disagree with something or something doesn't belong make sure to change it everywhere. I have a credit card with Washington Mutual Bank and I can see my credit score on there site and the accounts I have open. Check your bank to see if they have something similar. Good luck!

experion credit reporting agency, there are three major ones---google free credit reports--you are entitled by law to ask for and receive one free report,it should show all your past debts, for the last 7 years,,how much you owe and to whom and what actions they took against you,,,did you not ever get a letter from any collection agency,,lucky they did not try to garnish your wages, that is if you are employed

Go get your free credit report at annualcreditreport.gov and check out who all you owe. Don't go to that dumb web site with that annoying commercial, you'll have to put in a credit card #. Go to the government site, I hope I gave you the right address. Good luck!

1. Pay your bills on time. Your payment history is a major factor (35% of your FICO score) in determining your credit score. If you pay your bills late, or had an account referred to collections, your credit score will take a major hit.

2. Sign up for online banking and make sure your regular recurring bills are paid automatically. This way you will not forget a payment that will wind up reducing your credit score.

3. Increase your credit limit. Another large factor is the amount of your debt in relation to your credit limit. If you have a card with a $10,000 credit limit and your balance is $9,000, this will not help to improve your score. To make the debt/credit limit ratio look better, you can try to call your credit card company and request an increase in your credit limit. Don't use the extra credit though! That defeats the whole purpose and puts you further in debt!

4. Don't apply for many cards at once. This will not improve your credit score because this is a characteristic of high credit risk groups.

I have all the steps listed here :

You can get your credit reports from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus from the following web site:

http://www.annualcreditreport.com

You are entitled to a free report from each of the bureaus once per 12-month period. Each account (with contact information) should be listed. You can then contact the company and settle the debts.
