Fraudulent Charge on Credit Card?
I have a fraudulent charge on my credit card bill. I spoke to my credit card company and they said they will cancel the card and mail me a new one, and they will investigate this charge. I have excellent credit and I don't want this to mess it up.

I always pay my credit card bill in full when I get it, but I don't want to pay for this charge (which happens to be the only charge on the bill) since I didn't make the charge. I'm wondering if I should in fact just make the minimum payment so that my perfect credit stays intact. The credit card company said that if it is found to be a fraudulent charge, anything I pay towards the charge will be refunded back to me, including any interest paid.

Has anyone had any experience with something like this. I'd like to hear how this was handled by someone who experienced something like this.

This happened to me also and everything worked out fine. The credit card company is supposed to reverse the charge while they investigate so you shouldn't have to pay anything. They should then send you an affidavit to fill out where you will swear that it wasn't your charge. They shouldn't report anything to the credit bureas either since it's a disputed charge. I wouldn't pay anything because you don't want to accept the charge. If you want to be extra safe you could contact the credit bureaus (all 3) and let them know and they can flag your account so it won't look as though you just opened a new credit card so you could spend it. If you want to be really sure, browse your state's attorney general's office and they have a consumer section where you can check out the facts of what the credit card company has to do for you and then call the company and verify that they're following the rules. Good luck. It should be fine.

As long as there is an ongoing investigation on the charges, they can't penalize you for not paying it. You need to contact the credit report companies .(Experian, Transunion and Equifax) and have them issue a fraud alert. This will prevent anyone from opening anything in your name without your knowledge.

GOOD LUCK!

I had someone take a weekend trip to Florida on my credit card once. I had it canceled within 24 hours but it wasn't enough. I would tell your bank to put a status on that charge that declares it a stolen card or identity theft charge. The bank will fix it because thats what you pay them for. They may ask you later if you want to the bank to prosecute, even if its a minimal amount you should have them crush who ever did it. Identity thieves are the scum of the earth.

You won't get a late fee while the charge is in dispute. If you pay you lose all your leverage.

If the charge small enough that you can pay it without any problems, go ahead and send them the money, but dispute the charge.

If the investigation proves that it was fraudulent, they'll put the money back into your account (you'll have a negative credit balance)

It's happened to me twice. Both times my Visa credit card company covered the loss and I suffered no negative effects at all. They do have a process that they must go through and they will ask you to sign an affidavit concerning your account activities and it's binding. It's all part of the process they need to do to recover their loss. It's time consuming at best but you won't even feel any pain by it. Visa Cards are (( fully guaranteed )) for such fraudulent activity.

Yeah your best bet will be to pay it But they will put it on the back burner so make sure you stay on top of them. Also find out how long they think it should take

Make the payment just in case. Your good credit record is worth far more than those few dollars.
