Getting out of credit card debt?
Can anyone offer really good tips on how to get out of credit card debt? I'm just like my mom and money burns holes in my pockets, I just can't seem to buckle down and just "do it", so to speak.

Can anyone offer some tips or advice that will really work? I've tried cutting up my card but they (credit card company) just sent me a new one a few months later (no, they didn't know I had cut it up...how did they know?)...they even increase my limit and I don't know about it. The main problem is that I make a payment of about $500 a month, but then I end up using it again! What can I do? Help!

Cancelling the card isn't an option as my credit will go down the tube with it. My credit is actually good I just can't seem to pay it off completely.

you really need get tough on yourself and stop over spending or you are going to dig yourself deeper. Decide on an amount you can pay every month to your credit card that will leave you a little cash to spend. Only spend the cash, not the card. It feels good to make a big payment on your card, but if you are only going to recharge, what is the point. Learn to spend only what you have in hand.

I would cancel all of your credit cards except for one. (Choose the one with the lowest interest rate). Probably the best thing for you to do, since you lack control is not carry your credit card with you. Only use it when you truly need it. Some people even freeze their card in a bag of ice in the freezer. It'll make you think twice about a purchase. You don't have any impulse buys. You also need a budget. If you have to have a new pair of shoes, you'll just have to cut back in other areas. Maybe not eat out so much. Don't carry alot of cash on you either and you won't spend it.

A credit counsellor can give you strategies to repay your debt faster. They may also be able to help with lower interest rates and lower payments.

Cancel the cards. Tear up any other Credit Card offers that come into your house. I took out a loan and paid off my cards and that has helped AND I've just made sure I either use cash to pay for stuff or use my checking account debit card. You can do it!!

carlos
ask them to lower your limit every month.

... or get a prepaid card !

lighthouse
Pay it off and use your debit card.

they sent out another copy of the card when it's almost expired, so cut it up again, they won't send i in a while (at least 2 years)

you should open an account with treasury direct and have part of your pay check direct deposit into it, then set up recurring purchase for bonds. there are different bonds, bills for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, ect up to 30 years. the bills(these are under 2 years) are minimum of 1000, savings bonds are 5 years and up minimum purchase is 25 dollars.

the interest you earn are tax exempt from the state. you can find out more information on the site

start paying it off, tell them to close the account and just keep it paid off!

its a hard lesson to learn,i suggest you get credit counseling and if you are serious about getting it under control, tell your credit card companies to stop sending you more cards and close the accounts and just pay them off....like i did.i ended up filing bankruptcy because i got so far in,it is an addiction, but there is a way out...and you should start paying cash for everything, and i don't mean with cash advances via your credit cards either....

Find a reputable credit consultant or debt agency. They will contact debtors and get your debt reduced (interest and total amt.). You must, however, agree not to use your cards. They will have them cancelled after you start the program. You may consider keeping ONE for emergency use only.

There is some useful advice here.

reichman2007
Stop paying and let them sue you. If you are on a low income or have no job, they will get basically nothing.

Tragically, it sounds like you're just financially irresponsible. I don't know of any "tricks" that will make you otherwise if that's the case. Maybe you could go into Chapter 13. I'm pretty sure you won't be allowed to amass fresh debt if you do, and you'll be put on a payment plan that may help you eventually pay this off.

UPDATE: You are an idiot. Don't cancel the card, then, so why are you here? Are you hoping that someone has a magic bullet for inumerate dolts like you? Keep your card, keep spending and the REALLY watch your credit go down the tube. Idiot.
