Going to bank tomorrow to see about getting a credit card...what reasons should I give?
Well tomorrow I'll be going to the bank to try and get a credit card. The real reason is because I want to try get out of my overdraft for once by the end of the month by putting my normal monthly costs onto a credit card and then paying that off at a suitable pace to me.

Right now I spend nearly every penny of my wages by the end of the month. And last month I was on holiday and a large chunk of the money problems I'm having just now are as a result of going away.

But now I want to rescue my bank balance and eventually reduce my overdraft. And I think a credit card will help me do this.

Now do I tell the bank this? Or will this go against my appeal for a credit card. If so, what reasons (lies) should I give?

I've been refused credit with other companies in the past but I think if I go into the bank and speak personally to someone, I will give myself a better chance of obtaining one. Am I right to think this?

no you are not right, and you will just get yourself into more trouble. you are spending more than you earn, and there aren't any tricks to make that come out okay. Why did you go on holiday and spend more money than you have?

I think you have to face up to the fact that you make less money than you wish to spend, and either spend your free time making more money with a second job, or cut back on spending.

Sorry, but your bank will not extend credit to a person who is thinking like you are.

You are not thinking this through. Don't fall into such a credit trap. Never get credit to make up for a shortfall in you monthly income unless this is short term and you make enough money to pay it off eventually. This sound dangerous to me. You will find a bank to give you a card, I am sure, but they will kill you with the interest rate. Bring in more income instead. Good luck and be careful.

I suggest you cut down on expenses and pay down the overdraft little by litte. Stay away from credit cards...they hurt your credit, cause you to spend more than you make, and put you further into debt.

REASONS FOR GETTING A CREDIT CARD

As far as I am aware bank lenders do not require a reason specific. If the assistant asks they are not authorised by law to and they will be asking informally. But its obvious you want to improve your finances - so just give them that broad answer. You don't need to go into the particularities, or give any of the detailed personal reasons you have given above.

Primarily, the reason why bank lenders do not require a reason specific is because they want as many people on their cards as possible!

They test you on purported objective criteria - a credit score. You must meet the credit score check they will make of you. They will ask the credit agencies statutorily authorised by this government to collate personal data about you, to provide them with the information about your financial history and relationship with companies so they can score your financial history. If you meet their levels, you will get the card. If not, then you will not - no matter what the personal reason is for getting a card.

I would ask for a loan not a credit card as the APR will probably be an higher int erst rate than you overdraft. Many banks will try and help if you are fully honest with them. Good luck

Duh! just spend less and then you won't go overdrawn - people should live within their means. Holiday? we can't afford one so haven't had one! Credit cards and loans are the cause of so much extra debt- sorry about the grumble x

Overdraft is a precaution that your bank already offers. I say stick to it and if you can balance your money better. Reasons for this.
You say you want a credit card so you can pay off at your pleasing these overdraft fees, however, your credit is probably bad so if the bank were to give you a card, it would be 20% apy, and you'd be paying your fees PLUS the interest.

I think your best bet is to simply manage that checking account better, and if possible ask to the bank about a smaller overdraft protection or see what options would think would be better for you.

Bad move, very bad move. If you are spending more than you earn you either need a better job or need to cut back. Otherwise you will rack up debt, plus the ridiculous interest, and never be able to get out of the hole. If this doesn't bother you now, it will later when you try to buy a car/house.

If you have been denied before, you will be denied again. The credit score comes from three companies, Equifax, TRW, and Experian (i think) They are the ones who tell the credit outfits whether you are "good for it" or not. Most banks do not hold their own credit lines, they are outsourced to Citibank, Chase and the likes.

Your only hope is with a credit union. If you establish an account with a credit union, they have *slightly* more leinient rules for their cardholders, because they sometimes carry their own credit.

DONT DO IT...you will be paying back sooo much interest to the credit card company you will get into bigger debt..trust me I been there.. your best bet is to talk to your bank and take out a sensible loan.. they WILL help you and you can get out of serious trouble.. with a loan at least you will know how much you will be paying back each month but with a credit card they are too easy to use and too hard to pay back.

just be honest with them but you will probably find you will get turned down anyway if you have been before no matter what you tell them

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT get a creditcard for this purpose..... generally if you've got bad credit they charge you MORE than having a bank overdraft....... generally 22-29% (sometimes even more than that), compared to a max 18.9% EAR for the amount Halifax charges on their current account overdrafts - thus putting you further, and further in debt.

Or try a low rate loan from ZOPA instead

Check your percentage rate of interest on your overdraft first as you may find that the credit card rate is higher than your overdraft rate. If you do get a credit card ask the bank if they can give you an introductory rate of 0% for at least 9 months so that you do not pay any interest on your credit card for that period. I think you should tell the bank exactly the reasons why you want it as they should be able to advise you and offer you the best options to suit your purpose.

Banks really are there to help you in these instances. Don't forget to shop around and see what the best offers are from other banks too.

Wiseup! Dude! They will be but putty in your hands! Afterall, giving you credit is the name of the game! So this is the plan, your going on a pretend vacation for 2 weeks, and the credit card is to pay for it,work out how much you need, and then multiply by a factor of 4. They will probably ask where you are going, maybe Cancun.they will love it!
