Grace period/late on car payment?
I have been sorta late on my car payments for the last couple of months, they just keep hitting me up with late fees, which is fine, I completely understand that. What I am wondering is, if I keep being (usually 10 days at the most) late on my car payments, will they reposess my car?? Everyone tells me not to worry that there is a grace period, and so far, nothing has been reported on my credit report for being late... thanks

Auto finance is what I do for a living and these people do not know what they are talking about.

First of all you must be 30-days of more late with your payment for them to report it to the credit bureaus.

Second they can not even think about repossessing your vehicle until you have missed 3-payments.

Third the only negative thing that will happen besides the late fees is that your account will be flagged as whats called internally late. This will keep you from being able to get additional loans from your lender and will cause them to not want to work with you if you are ever in default.

See if they will give you a 2 month extension on your loan. In most cases, it is available after 12 months. If they will not grant it, try paying 1 1/2 payments for 2 months, that way it is putting the account ahead 30 days.

Sweet Lilies & Lavender
There is a grace period on most auto loans. Usually it is 7 days. If they received it within 10 days, they usually will hityou with lates fees, and not report it on your credit. However, you might want to be careful....many creditors report every three months. As long as you are making your payment, weather it is late or not, they can not reposess your car.

I've always heard that you have to be at least 3 months overdue before they can legally repossess your vehicle.

As long as you are making the payments, I don't think they can repo you car. Late payments do affect your credit score. If you are always 10 days late, maybe you could call and see if you could get the payment date changed from like the 1st to the 15th

usually they won't even think about beginning a repo action till you are 30 days late; doesn't mean they can't.

Read your loan documents; each loan is different and the conditions are spelled out there.

It is usually only reported if you are over 30 days late. You probably won't have problems if its less than that. You might want to change your payment due date if you are always 10 days late.

once you have established (ususally over a 4-6 month time) that you are a late payer, they will report that to your credit report. But if you are able to swing back to the 10 days and begin your payments on or a few days before the due date, you can begin a new record with them. For your car to be repossed it takes not making any payment or working out any arrangements with the creditor. They simply don't come get your car, they benefit more if you make the payments, at the beginning of the loan, most of what you pay is the interest that would be collected over the terms of loan, so they are happy that you are paying cuz right there is how they make all their money. If once you are paying most of the principle (the actual car value) they get a bit stiffer with the payments. Cuz they stand to loose more, the actual car if you aren't making the payments then.

Late is alright, it's not good, if you want to maintain an excellent credit rating; I know the cycle of getting a few weeks behind and not being able to reverse it cuz other bils are due, but you won't loose your car for payments that are 10 days late. BUT think about the interest that is adding up and late payments you are paying it may be very worth your while to switch up the payments so you get yours in on time.

one thing I can say is that if you having trouble making payments go and talk to them most of the time they will be more than willing to try and help you make your payments on time

if its just that you are forgetting then all I can say is find a way to remind yourself

They may not repossess your car but they may place a mark on your credit report if you consistently pay late, especially if you make a payment 30 days late. Even if it is an accident or not your fault.

This could affect the interest rate of the next car or house you buy.

Yes, they can repo your car the very next day after you are in default....most MAJOR financial institutions will not reposses so quickly...however, a very small institution will not hesitate to repo the vehicle when you least suspect it.

Why risk it and end up with a mark on your credit? Besides, why keep paying late fees? Get your bill to current, then call them and ask about moving your payment back by a week or so. I did this, even though I was never late, my car payment was due 5 days after rent and phone bills. They moved my payment to the 15th. Now I have that time to get another check before my bill is due.
